Changed DS CV shaft, drive flange and wheel bearings with Toyota units. Installation was per FSM.

Noise sounds occurs whenever coming off gas but without heavily applying brakes. Sounds like rubbing fingers across a large glass pane. It has gotten worse in the 2 days since the installation and seems to be worse after driving for some time.

I'm having a hard time thinking of what it could be and wanted to see if anyone who has more experience with CV's had any off the cuff guesses.

Thanks,
Bailey

Did you solvent tank/thoroughly clean the bearing cavities apart of the steering knuckle arm by chance)?

And either way did you be sure to lube the needle bearing with grease? The needle bearing resides about 1" inboard of the inside knuckle surface. Its often overlooked and it might just make a noise as you describe if its bone dry.

Also...the disk brake dust shield/backing plate is easily knocked/bent out of position apart of this job and will also make a high pitched noise if its rubbing on the rotor.

Thanks for the response, spresso.

To be honest, the needle bearing did cross my mind, however, I did not remove the knuckle/spindle completely or clean out the needle bearing. I did add more fresh grease to the needle bearing and brass bushing.

The noise is not a "scrape" more of a lower frequency "rub" if that makes sense. Kind of "grabby". I was a little worried about the area

Ok...more than likely its not the needle bearing. The only other thing I can think of is the brake rotor dust shield; I've had that happen to me on a few different occasions front and rear after rushing along on either the brake job or swapping wheels...

Did you check the pads to be sure something didn't get lodged in between the pad and the rotor? Check the pads for wear?

You're sure you slammed the CV home on the diff side right?

Just trying to think of all the possibilities.

It's a long shot but did you grease down the lip of the seal that goes in between the diff and the drive shaft? Even though this sounds like a bearing issue, I could see not getting the seal fully seated and then forgetting to grease the lip, causing the sound you are describing.

Any chance the outer snap ring came off? Could be that under load the spines are locked up but neutral throttle they're moving around in the hub.

Looks like we may have figured it out.

DS spindle bearing and bushing was fine, so we checked the PS. Bushing came off with the CV shaft and there was a good bit of brass shavings between the bushing and oil seal.

We think that that area was probably underlubricated to begin with, and then when it didn't turn for about 2.5 months it got used to not turning and once we fixed the DS and reconnected the driveshaft and reinstalled the PS drive flange, the shaft took the bushing with it.

From what we can tell, the needle bearing and bushing are available from Toyota. Has anyone replaced these parts before? Anything weird about it?

Anyone ever changed the needle bearing in the spindle before?

Yes Bailey I have. There s a brass bushings on top of it that needs to be removed first then you can pull the needle bearing.

Both are serviced parts on the UZJ100.

We have them in stock if you need them.

Hope you are well my friend.
