I found some headrests, and am now looking at different fans to put in them. I have found some that say as low as 25 cfm and then up into the 100 and 200 range. So any good guesses on what cfm I should get to ruffle the hair of the kids? I dont want to be disappointed in the ones I buy, but also dont want so much air that it annoys them. Heres an example of what I found.

Tasty little Arctic muffin fan from Kest, and brand spankin' new. Measures 4-5/8" sq x 1-1/2 thick, draws 310mA at 120VAC, spins 3100 RPM and pushes 112 CFM with a 7-blade impeller. Twin 8" long leads with no plug. UL/CSA.

Any way you can get one and try it? You know you can vary the speed with voltage... What's the thinking on an AC vs DC power?

I was just about to head to fry's and pick up a nice 12v fan to ventilate my new Compressor box. I may go with one at the intake of the compressor motor. I will let you know what I find there.
thanks
Don

im seeing them online, I might head up to Fry's electronics, but im thinking that any fans meant to cool a computer isnt going to push enough air. AC or DC, I can do either. I think that if I buy a fan to try it out, its a little more difficult to return since its a electric. 118 degrees on our side of town today, sucks for my kids big time.

100 series would be the ideal answer Phil, but I dont have the big cash to drop for one and do a solid axle swap and all that to make it wheel like my 80.

Let me know what you find out Don about the fans.

:confused:A 100 will go anywhere your 80 will go...just ask Shotts:rolleyes:

Just go all the way and bolt one of these on the roof:

That way you can have a generator running to power the AC WHILE you drive...:flipoff2:

Dude, thats an awesome idea!! let me get right on that.

Dude, with your "stay at home mom" type lifestyle you really need a mini van. At least the 100 has some of that "rugged good looks" thing that you crave? ... Maybe... A Sienna would probably be a better fit, but It's impossible to look cool in one, it's a, turn in your man card thing.
:whoops: that probably doesn't apply in this case? :whoops::o

On the fan thing, my guess is your going to need at least a 6" fan to be happy with it, the standard 4" probably isn't going to cut it? I think there is a 6" here somewhere, will give a quick look.

DC motors are easily varied in speed by changing the supply voltage. AC motors typically run at a fixed speed, defined by the supply voltage frequency (Hz)...

I actually considered some of these for the Piggy. The smaller RV units are shorter that the spare that sits on my roof rack now. I figured on dumping the down draft right between the front seats! John

This one looks like a good candidate? About half way down the page;

(FAN) 032920
Comair Rotron fan. 235 cfm @ 0.768 static pressure. 12 vdc (6-14 vdc) @ 2.26 amps. 3,400 rpm. Metal frame, poly-carbonate blades, ball bearings. Open collector tach - two pulses / revolution. OEM price is $85. Model No: JQ12B7X. Mfg. P/N: 032920. 3,000 in stock.

I picked up a 200 cfm fan at frys. It looks like it's about 8 inches
Draws .70 amps and runs 37 decibels. Ill get you the details and picture tomorrow .
It looks promising. I may even have it installed tomorrow, depending how far I get on my complete rear area overhaul. I have ooodles of wiring to do.
thanks
Don

Honestly, I do plan on getting a kid toter in the future, and strongly consider a Honda Odyssey. Retire the cruiser from doing that. But for now im messing with the fan idea.

It doesnt matter whether its 120V or 12V, I have both in my truck. I'd like to see what you got laying around Kevin. I bought the highest cfm fan that Fry's Electronics had in the size I want. its 120V, and the cfm is 85/97. I rigged it up to work and it pushes more air than the current fans I have, but not enough. So im shooting for 200 cfm or more.

thats a good link Kevin, im going to check them out now. At least now I know what range I want. Im sure the one Don got is a monster for my application. But anyway, heres a few pictures of the one I tried out.

I don't keep up on the mini van world, but if your retiring the cruiser and moving to a mini van, I would think that the '100 might have a slight advantage off road over the Odyssey?

On the fan thing, think hard about cutting them into the padded part of the headrests. They are designed to protect your egg and support structure in the event of a rear ended accident. I would mount to the headrest legs or side handles, not the foam part of the headrest. Your not going to be much use to the kids with a broken neck?

im going to retire the cruiser............to the garage my friend. Use of my truck will be when I WANT to drive it, not when I HAVE to drive it. For running the kids around, the minivan kicks ass compared to everything else. I dont need 2 vehicles that can wheel. I guarantee the 100 series doesnt have the leg room or ease of use that a Odyssey does. I just had the sister-in-law visit for 2 weeks with her 3 and 1 year old, and my cruiser was the only vehicle in the group to handle that many people. 4 car seats,....that means 2 secured in the 2nd row, 2 in the 3rd. The 2nd row wont fold or tilt with car seats secured to them, so 2 of the kids are lifted up and through the sliding windows. Major pain.

On the fans, the smallest size I can find that pushes 250 cfm is 6" diameter. So im most likely going to get those. I'll have to brainstorm about using the headrest legs or side handles. I want a very secure and simple installation. I could put the round fans in some type of enclosure, then rack my brain on how to make an attachment from them to the side handles. I'll order the fans first.
