Anybody done one for the second row???

Thanks,
Dan

I have seen this done before but not on an 80. The vehicle(can't remember what) had a Milford Cargo Barrier that had an extra bar put across at seat top hieght to attach the belt to. Don't know what the US regulations in regards to seat belt modifications are but over here they need to be checked by an engineer. I'd chat to the engineer before starting any work if you need to get it checked.

I know where you can get some belts to try it out.....

Be advised this mod would not be for the faint of heart, and doing it wrong will increase injuries vs the lap belt in certain crash types. For instance, I've seen people route a shoulder belt down to a sturdy anchor on the cargo floor - a perfect way to crush the spine in even a moderate frontal crash.

Once you begin focusing on anchoring it above the seatback level, you start to appreciate how difficult something like this is to retrofit. Generally, from the window frame up, there are no "hard points" with the strength to install something like this except those on the sides for the factory shoulder belts. For proper angle, a roof mounted anchor point would be the ticket, but it would require massive reinforcement. Obviously an error here means in a crash the stretched seatbelt will bring the torn off mount forward with devastating effect.

So, go cautiously. My feeling would be a roll bar hoop mounted through the floor to the frame with the seatbelt anchored to the top of the hoop. Unfortunately, this means serious loss of cargo capacity.

Where do they anchor it on the 100 series?

My wife is pregnant with our third, and I would like to have our oldest in the middle so that she can belt herself in, and we have easier access to the littler ones. Problem is that her booster can only be used with a shoulder belt.....

thanks,
Dan

My 100 has the center seat belt top shoulder mount built into the top of the seat. It's actually a bit more compact than a typical seat belt arrangement, but my 7 year old looks very secure it in.

third row seat for the older one! a seat all to his or her self! fast an easy way of gewtting the proper seat belt location and anchorage.

the problem is that with two carseats in the 80, there is no access to the third row....

Put one in the 2nd row and the other in the 3rd row, on the same side?

I know the 2nd row would be ideal as far as safety goes, as well as looking back to comfort them and stuff, but... maybe this is what you are doing already.

Just a thought.

if you only put in one third row seat then third row acces ca be from the rear hatch, there is an interior lock & exit handle and everyting else for jsut such a use

Do no try to fab a sholder belt for your children, this is not a DIY task, more likely your oldest is better off in the OEM lap belt than a booty fabed sholder belt.

I've got the answer for you (depending how old/large your kid is). Get one of the forward facing car seat/boosters with integrated 4/5 point harness (they are out there), you can attatch it with the lap belt and then tie off the top to a solid mount point in the floor of the cruiser. Or have your oldest sit in the 3rd row, just keep one of the 3rd row seats folded down, access is pretty easy from the tailgate.

Ben's got it. We have the larger Britax seats that go to 65lbs and our daughter is 8 and still able to sit in it. They also make a larger model yet called the Husky - available in all manner of stylish colors, etc. Go to www.britaxusa.com to see it.

Just as Ben notes. The seat is restrained in place with a lap belt, comes with an upper strap that goes rearward to the cargo floor. Your oldest is held in place with far superior restraint than the 80s lap belt - a full on 5 point harness.

The ones we have are even the only side impact rated child seats in the world.

If you can't convince him/her to go this route, use one of the third row seats. Statistically, the right rear position would be safer simply because this position is isolated more from an offset frontal collision.

Thanks for the input folks, Looks like no center shoulder belt for me. I'll probly end up with #2 in the middle cuz he'll be able to climb into the seat and big sis can buckle him, and then put #3 on one of the sides.

FWIW, my daughter was in that nasty rollover with me, and even sitting up front with a measly booster seat and the factory belt, she had no injuries save a light seatbelt burn on her neck......I count myself very fortunate

Thanks again folks

Kliers,

I'm incredibly happy to hear that you and your little sweetie there are fine. My 7yo daughter has those same boots, and the same pink fixation....

That was quite a hit on the first roll. Looks like you rolled to the left, which is actually kind of unusual and often means you were fast enough to catch a right slide but not the resulting snap to the left. Most don't catch the first one if my guess is correct. Thanks for posting the pictures of what is clearly one of the most distressing things that will ever happen to you. These things will roll, and we all need to remain aware of this here.

What happened?

Doug,
Are you going to the pinehurst Run? If so I'll tell you about it there.
In short, the tongue on an unnamed rental company's carhauler broke off, causing a nasty death wobble between the trailer and the vehicle on the trailer. I downshifted from OD to 2nd and things were looking pretty good until the tongue swung forward and lodged between the frame rail and the Right rear wheel. That broke off all of my wheel studs on that tire and sent me and the trailer into a passenger side slide, turned about 110 deg before impacting the median, the 80 rolled once and then back onto the roof again, the Pig and trailer rolled once and ended up on their wheels, still stuck together. I came out with a mild concussion and my daughter was fine. Both rigs were trashed. I'll probly put a full writeup back in chat next week with a bunch of pics. Again, I count myself fortunate.

Dan

Edit: there, now there's nothing on there that they don't already know.

Delete that immediately. What Pinehurst run?

DougM

dono might be good info for others, maybe just clean it up as necissary?

Oh, that Pinehurst run. Yeah, I'm thinking of going. Watching the weather and such hoping the forecast will clear from current. There's a monthly meeting of the club here in CDA this week and I'm thinking of going to meet the guys and find out more info as well.

How about you?

DougM

Probly can't make it to the meeting, but we're planning on going to the run. The green one was my wheeler, so it'll probly have to be the T100, which is less than ideal. I've been eyeballing an old mini with a 350 sitting on 35's with front and rear lockers but won't know for sure on that one till thursday.

Edited that post so there isn't anything that isn't common knowledge.

Thanks,
Dan
