Not a big deal but want my smooth action cup holder cover to work again. Took the center console apart to see what was going on. The cover is slow to open - even stops mid-way through - and is making a clicking noise.

The arrow in the photo is pointing to the end of the spring and doesn't look right, in terms of not being attached to anything. Plus, it's making the clicking because it is moving during opening.

The video might not be much help as you really can't see what's going on, but the clicking sound is coming from the elbow part of the spring as it moves during opening.

Mine behaves exactly the same way as yours. Kind of stops halfway ane needs a little push to go the rest of the way. I took mine out and cleaned it all up and it helped a little but it still is not working very well. I just leave it open anyway because I'm always putting something in it and because the top surface has this big ugly wear mark from where it hits the console when its open.
Very poor design in my opinion.
Good luck with it.

Ditto, on my 03.

Mine acts like a hat, no mechanism working whatsoever

Mine will not open easily if I close it so I keep it open. How did you remove it from the center console.

^ I didn't - I removed the entire center console. However it appears after removing the console you can remove the cup holder with three screws

Do you mean you realized you could've removed it with three screws, or you could remove it with three screws after removing the entire center console? I'd like to pull mine out to compare it to yours just to see if there's something obvious. My shop builds machines that assemble things like center consoles, we've usually got plenty of these kind of compartment door openers laying around, but they're all custom and not usually interchangeable.

^ the later - looks like I could remove via the three screws only after pulling the entire console out. I say "looks like" because I haven't actually unscrewed it yet - maybe it is additional attached somewhere else - will try tonight and see.

Ok think I figured it out.

There was a tab broken off in which the spring wire attached to (arrow at bottom right). I glued a new, longer/strong tab on and in testing it prior seems like this will fix it. The clicking sound was coming from that spring wire moved over the gear as the cup holder lid was opened and closed.

Cool.
& u actally found a glue which holds this plastic?
Good research.

It was some type of resin my partner had at work - said it actually bonded (melted) the two plastics together. It certainly is strong enough to hold that little spring wire.

Door works smooth as new.

And there was an added benefit of taking out the center console and removing the switches.... enabled a major cleaning. Things were filthy!

Is it supposed to open on its own!? Mine never did. Found the spring completely disconnected. Trying to figure out how to put it back together...

EDIT*
Got it back together, it opens on its own now but won't close... I can force it a bit to make it stay closed but then it won't reopen.

To be more specific, it won't catch the pin at the bottom to latch closed. With a small amount of force, I can get the pin in to close it but even that is not something I would be able to do if this was actually installed

Your center console may not be aligned correctly. Mine did that until I adjusted it.
