I am looking to put a CB in the 60 and i would like to install it in the lil' cubby underneath the radio. I know its not a huge spot to put a CB but there has to be one out there that fits perfectly in there. Does anyone know of a brand and model?

Radio shack, for me...

I have one in mine and it's an older Radio Shack CB...I may have a pic here and it fits perfectly in the cubby...

PM me with your email address and I'll get some pics out to you. It's a very nice, clean install.

From what I've measured, the Uniden 510 and 520 are a little small, but there's a new one out from Midland, the 1001z that will fit pretty well - might need a little work...

The cubby hole is 1 3/4" x 6" and the Midland 1001z is 1 3/4" x 4;the Uniden 510/520 is 1 1/2" x 4". They have the Midland at Frys (though out of stock, I was going to buy one this weekend) for $39.99. They are the same depth, however. With either unit, you'll have to get an external speaker if you mount it in under the radio.

I wrote up instructions when I installed mine...

I wrote this up when I installed mine - I think the speaker placement is slick (under the dash where the original speaker might go)

first, take off the trim around the climate controls, you'll need to pull out the ashtray and take out the two screws behind it and the whole thing will pull out. Don't forget to pull the little lever doo-hickies for the fan, temp, and stuff.
Second, take out the four screws holding the pocket, it too, will come right out.
Now, take the empty pocket to your friendly neighborhood Radio Shack or electronics store and find a small CB that will fit. The one I have fits perfectly, with about 1/4" space on all sides. I used a dremel tool to cut out the back of it to run wires, and give it a little more depth.
Wiring: easy stuff. I tapped into the power from the cig. lighter and hooked up the ground. Here's the slick part...since CB's that small don't usually have speakers in the unit, you need to get a remote speaker. In my 86 I have the space for a speaker in the dash-pad on top (all those holes). I can't remember if there was a speaker there or I bought one to fit, it's a standard size. That way you don't have a big ugly speaker to install and the sound is right there where you can hear it. I think I had to get to it by taking out the glove box insert.
then, just put everything together and you should be good to go. (oh, test it before putting everything together, I've definitely wired things, reassembled only to find I didn't hook up the ground properly or some other stupid thing).

glad to help...

My pleasure...It's nice to be able to give back once in awhile.

I was planning to submit this to the tech side of the board, and have some pics of the install of the CB into the pocket. I may actually get around to submitting it one of these days...;-)

That's a good point about the Uniden (I think the RS is just a Uniden re-badge, at least that's what I've heard) fitting directly in the cubby pocket...I was intending to take that out altogether and jam the radio in it's place. Wasn't sure how I was going to mount it or fill the extra space (was thinking of doing something with the mic mount...)

Post up some pics man, stop holding out on us! :D

i have the cobra classic....the old style looking one. it fits perfectly in the hole below the stero...perfectly as in 1.2 second with a file or dremel to make the corners of the hole square.....but it looks gooooood. IMO

this whole work thing is for the birds...

Sorry...this whole work thing gets in the way of all my fun! I'll post up some pics when I get home...it'll probably be after 7:30pm MT.

Steam Driven computer

Sorry about not posting pics last night...I kept locking up my computer while trying to resize the pics...I guess the ol' girl just can't handle it anymore. But, it's a 10 year old Celeron HP...no big surpizes there!

I emailed a batch to BigSur, maybe he can resize and post. If not, I emailed them to myself at work, so if anyone wants them, I can send along. Maybe you've got the 'power' to resize and post for me?

Thanks!

I have a midland 1000, that fits perfectly into your ash tray spot. All you have to do is remove your ash tray, remove the ash tray braket, screw in the CB bracket (comes with radio), screw CB into braket, and its as easy as that!!

:bounce: :bounce2: :bounce2: :bounce:

(only tools needed are philips and flat screw driver)

D'oh! Me and my ancient Computer...

yeah - you're so right...any chance I could send'em to ya' for resizing and posting? Mine took about 5min just to rename, then when I tried to re-size, it locked up...damn thing.

Maybe BigSur can do it? I sent him all the pics this morning...

I got the pics...but i can't re-format them to make them fit. They are pretty large files.

Sorry about that...

Yeah - that formt works well for getting them printed...but not so good to post on the web. I've since changed the format on the camera...

Did those pics help? There's like a little plastic knob that's screwed in the side holding the unit in the pocket.

Sorry again, for the Huuuuumongous files...

The files didn't do anything to my PC...i have plenty of space. But reading your right up and looking at the pics but total sense. Great job on both ends.
