Hello everyone- I tried to do a search on this and couldn't come up with much. I've done most of the things needed to clear the annoying po420 code, but it keeps coming back.

After replacing and/or checking everything else, Cats are my last item to change (most costly) to fix it.

Are aftermarket single Cats legal compared to the original dual cat design? Or does it just have to pass emissions?

What kind of luck have people had with this when they switched to a single cat (welded in) system?

Thanks!

I am in texas, I was told that if I was to replace my cats it had to be with the same system (dual) as it was originally out of the factory. I replaced both my cats with some Catco. high flow cats. I can't say that I have noticed a substantial increase in power but I am happy with them and they cost me 242.00 installed. Originally I had wanted to save some money and go with a single large diameter high flow unit, but I was told it was not legal.

On a BMW board a lot of guys are using Magnaflow cats, with good results and good smog tests. I don't have smog testing, but I had a pair put on my BMW and they work well. $200 for the pair installed, done in one day, at Muffler Man, a local chain. I wouldn't recommend Midas or a major chain unless you know someone there.

Was that $242 total for both? If so, that's pretty reasonable. I assume you had the PO420 code also? I just replaced the second O2 sensor for last time, if this doesn't work its on to new cats. My exhaust kind of stinks a little also.

I also cleaned the MAF sensor and got rid of the oily K&N filter- maybe this will help.

Anyone know a good independent muffler shop in the Atlanta, GA area? I have NOT been impressed with the local Meineke place- they replaced an O2 sensor gasket and forgot to properly tighten down the nuts holding the O2 sensor back down- morons!

I would suggest you check with your local smog cops first to see what they view as acceptable for replacement parts.
