2018 – Carolina Overlanders

October 5-7th

Looks like this will be pretty cool. And very reasonably priced. That, and it appears to be more 'fun' based than a serious competition.

Teams are 4 people/2 trucks. And I've been told that this weekend isn't booked yet with the family (which is a rare event)

Who wants to put a team together? Or a couple of teams....

Smells kinda like the red clay rally with the "challenges", but it looks interesting.

Yeah - I hear ya. But we can't voice our concerns if we're not there.

Sounds like the challenges will be more 'treasure hunt' type activities rather than 'first to the top'... At least, I hope that's the case.

I got the same feeling. I’d rather do the same thing in a small group at a appropriate pace with my ONSC family.

Me too. You gonna organize a treasure hunt style rally? Did an on-road one as a teen with my parents. Took a lot of planning by the people that put it together. I was a teen that hated everything and I had a blast with my brother and my parents figuring out clues, finding items on the list.

Tread Lightly is one of the rules. So there’s that.

But it’s fine. I see there’s not much interest.

I suggested we do one in the past, and I am happy to help set it up. I did some in Ohio that were very family-friendly, stressed complete compliance with laws (speed, legal public roads), and everyone had a blast. They were T-S-D rallies with treasure hunt and a few interesting questions based on observations. Again, if anyone wants to get one going for ONSC, let's do it.

This one in NC is a bad fooking idea. That event is the kind of idiotic thinking that gets bad videos in facebook of vehicles racing thru forest. And you know they will be racing, its limited time, and the most distance gets the more points. Distance over time is speed for those who believe in science. Then the videos are used by every group that wants to ban vehicles. Plain fooking stupid. But I dont have an opinion on it.

I'm interested James, it's that I don't want to be a part of a large "rally" style event like that because I don't trust people in the broverlanding community enough to be responsible. If someone in that event pulls a red clay rally, and I'm in that event, I'm then also part of the problem.

I think a geocaching type event around pisgah/cherokee/smoky mountains would be bad ass, but I'd want it to be TLCA clubs only.

Idea time. This would be a hell of an event to put together with UC, LCLC, STLCA, Georgia Cruisers, Appalachia Cruisers, etc.

The most distance gets the most points? where did you see that?

But yes, I'm fully on board with saying to heck with this one and putting our own together for TLCA only. I'm willing to play a reasonably active role in setup/planning/execution/getting sponsors/catering/picking up a keg/massaging pigs/etc... knowing that I wouldn't be able to participate is a little bit of a bummer, but I love this kinda stuff. Breakout rooms are about my favorite, but treasure hunts come in pretty close. I used to do "Hashing" if anyone has experienced that mess... Had to bow out when I found out the local group was taking the tongue in cheek debauchery too literally.

It doesn't say "the most distance", but it does say, and I'm quoting this, "The further or harder the challenge, the more points it will be worth." That's the same thing in my eyes.

It also says "The team with the most points wins." meaning that people will get through the longer (further) and more difficult (harder) challenges as quickly as possible. That means going fast to me. It's not all driving though, which is good;

"The geolocations range from paved roads, forest roads, semi-hardcore trails, and hikes all while you choose the route."

There are no trail systems other than the HC/Sundquist trail system in that region, so I'm assuming that's what they mean by semi-hardcore trails and forest roads. "You choose the route" implies people will be looking for shortcuts, and going fast to get the most points first, on trails that are already at risk. I'm not certain that the participants of this event will cause damage like Red Clay Rally participants did, but they've got all the right ingredients to produce the same outcome.

Not trying to harp on you bud, just trying to articulate my disinterest in this event. By all means, join up and let us know how it goes!!!

I second your self nomination, and offer my assistance. Might wanna talk to @erymer and the other powers that be and see if they'd want to be part of the planning/club sponsorship.

Oh, sorry guys, hadn't had my coffee yet. What I meant to say is that this NC rally is a stupid fooking idea, not a bad fooking idea. Caffeinated now and much calmer. The North Carolina Trails Committee is where the videos of the morons racing in the forests will be shown, the hiking, biking, and equestrian members always bring them up as examples, and the off-road vehicle communities are way under represented.

I am working with some elected officials and other large lobbying 4WD groups to make sure we are represented, the committee has a term that expired. But events like this rally, well, they become the problem as dumbasses will be racing through the woods for a plastic trophy. The cycling and other interests can sit there and play the public videos, and we have no defense besides "its just a small group". Then they show more videos, and the secretary of the DENR agrees, leading to us getting more restrictions. So it is real and we, unwittingly the collective we, give them the proof they need to exclude 4WD as we tear the land and increase erosion problems.

I think you both are pretty spot on here. As it reads, there is plenty of reason to believe that there will be people going as fast as possible to finish the challenges.

I mean I like the last few lines of the disclaimer:
  1. Follow the rules of the road
  2. Don’t be a dick, we are all here to have fun
  3. Teams must follow Tread Lightly
Although they are trying to put the right verbiage out there I think we all know how this ends up. If it were more like a Poker Run or an event in which your rate of time to finish was not a key, then it could be fun. That or with a group that you know would not put forth a poor image. Just at one of the last URE get together's there was a scavenger hunt and there were a few folks leaving huge dust clouds behind them and it's just not a good scene for the community.

Not trying to pile on as I think there are some good ideas for a potential event here with the club, but this just feels like an opportunity for something that would make us look bad.

I'm up for either the "official" or the ONSC version. I will have my ambulance ready to roll brahs!
