Cargo Box [Design Stage]

Well, I hope to get to building my cargo box by the end of Summer but Rotors and Birffs will take priority, oh and another planter box for the .

Anyway I have been playing around with this new 3D program (REVIT) that I learned last month and this is what I came up with.

But first my criteria and thinking:
* I feel I just need a half drawer cargo box for all of my tools.
* I also didn't want the wait of a full double drawer cargo box
* I already have a trunk full of camping gear that I just grab and toss in the back and I would like to keep the center of gravity of the ice chest low to the floor.
* I want the option of carrying one more person by putting one of the third row seat in the back and not have to remove the box EVER.
*I have opted to put it on the passenger sides since by PHAT A$$ is in the Driver seat and my Hanna bumper has the tire swing on the DS as well.

So what do you guys think? I know I have to work on a middle support and don't worry my PHAT A$$ will be on the caargo box side, the will get the cot side.

I like this design and flexibility.

How are you going to hinge the "rear" portion with the DS part that swings up?

Moreover, how are you going to support it when flat for sleeping yer arse?

Yeah, a piano hinge will probably NOT do the trick, too weak I would assume. So I will probably use three door hinges and router them so they sit flush.

And for the front board that goes over the second row seats I plan to use some type of fasteners that help hold it in place. I have the McMast book on my desk here at work now.

IN my opinion the piano hinge is stronger then the door hinges because the weight is distributed evenly across the entire length of your box. I use piano hinges all the time for window seats and they hold my 215 Lbs. with no problem. if you run the hinge on the edge of your material and only use every other hole with one inch screws you will have the strongest hinge that is practical. Keep us posted.

In my experience with cabinet building, I'd agree with Hawkeye about the piano hinge being strong.

The part I'm thinking about is that part that would swing up over the PS. How would you attach /support the front part to the part that folds over the PS? ..hmmm.

So, when you remove the DS 3rd row seat and want to use the full across box for loading or sleeping, how will it be supported. The reason I ask is that I really like the idea of the flexibility, but practicality rules, so if it's too funky or not strong enough, you won't be able to sleep on it like you want it seems.

Maybe something like a simple leg that would support both pieces when they're in place would do the trick. Only use it when you take the DS seat out.

Not sure I am following you on the second part of your question but I think I can answer them.

OK for the back part of the platform (front of truck) that goes over the top of the folded down second row seats, it will just rest on the top of the seats that are folded down. I am currently looking for a certain hardware to help hold it in place both when flat and vertical. But I have a simple solution in my head that I just need to find on a little larger scale than what I have seen at home depot for hanging photos. Basically the box on top at the back and at the very bottom in back will have a flat metal loop and the board for the front part of the platform will have a tab to slide into that flat loop. So when the 2nd row seats are up the board will go vertical and slip into these metal rings at the bottom of the back of the box. These same loops will be on top of the box at the back and when I lay the board flat again the tabs will slide into the loops. I will try and draw a little detail in 3D today if I have time.

And as for the 3rd row DS that platform will be supported by the two legs that swing out from the side of the box.

I think I see what you mean, so make the front part that goes across the second row more independently supported rather than rely so much on the rear box.

I've seen the brackets that you're talking about (I think) on sectional couches to hold them together. You actually have to lift one part of the sectional up and slot it down into the corresponding part - am I getting it?

Yeah, that front piece is going to be totally independent and probably only in the rig for an overnight camping trip. And yeah the hardware will work similar to chairs that attach together in rows for seminars in hotel conference rooms.
