carburetor swap question?

I am in need of a carburetor, my old one can not be rebuilt, and was wandering if you could swap a carburetor from a 79 FJ40 2F engine and put in a 1987 FJ60 2F engine? I was thinking that carbs from 8/1980 through 8/1987 were interchangeble but before that they were not. Does this sound right?
