a couple of months ago i was having stalling problems and i thought i had fixed it.....steps taken (its a carbed unit SBC)
1. cleaned fuel tank
2. installed Vented gas cap (de smogged system)
3. Two new fuel filter (glass type)
4. new electric pump 4-7 psi
5. new fuel lines tank to carb

heres the scenario.... after installing new lines, fuel filter and e.pump obviosly the lines are still empty of fuel until i turn on the ignition....so i turn it on and then i can hear the electric pump (loud) for about 5 seconds and then it quiets down....now the fuel is at the carb.... 1 click and it starts.....

next day went for a drive stalls again gasping for fuel and bucks....turned ignition off and then turned it on.....i can hear the electric pump (loud) waiting for the 5 seconds for it to quite down ........and it does'nt, this is where the glass fuel filter comes into place looked at the one before the electric pump...full of gas and no debris....so i move on to the next glass filter before the carbuerator.....full of gas and no debris either......But the electric pump is still loud as if its still trying to prime fuel to the carb (i dont get it ...the fuel is there why does it try to prime.......so i try and start it anyways..... hard starting and then started running but the carburator back fired...and died.......so i turn the ignition on again and the electric pump is actually quite this time but working.....i start it and starts right up. I looked under the rig and no fuel leaks. whats wrong with my carb would a stuck float do this,.I hope someone can shed some light on this problem:cheers:
By the way i can recall the PO told me he had the carbed fixed in the past so it wouldnt stall on an incline or off camber situation.. i wonder? any thoughts any body? Thanks in advance to all and happy holidays!

What kind of carb? Quadrajet has a small filter in the fuel inlet that may be stopped up. Take the fuel line off where it goes into the carb, then turn on the ignition. If you hose the truck down with gas, problems in the carb.

Try not to smoke during this operation:beer::beer:

Did you bypass the mechanical fuel pump? They have weep holes that may be a source of air leak.

I use both, and only use the electric pump when switching tanks, or priming system after long sit, but not for normal driving (unless mechanical fails on the trail).

Sounds like your fuel pump is going bad or you a pulling a vacuum in your tank.

Take your fuel cap off and see if the problem goes away.

I tried my new back up one for the trail, and it does the same thing:bang: it does have a new vented cap but i will try and take the whole cap off and see what happens.

its an edelbrock,i will check if there is a filter.

yes, no mechanical pump..thats a good idea you have though ill keep that in mind for future mod.

Are the fuel filters installed correctly? in/out? I understand why you're using glass filters, but a word of caution, I know someone who had 1 and the glass broke, while he was driving. He almost burned his vehicle up.

Yes they are on correctly arrow towards the fuel flow to the carb. thanks for the warning once i get this down i will get the plastic see thru ones.

x2 on the glass but I'd also follow up on a story with the plastic fuel filters.

Sagebrush pulled off the zip tie that kept my plastic fuel filter from bouncing off the exhaust. It burned through and nearly cost me dearly.

Needless to say I've since changed the routing.

Howdy! Edlebrock/Carter usually do not have a built in filter. They may have spring-loaded floats. Next time try a sharp rap with a small wrench on the carb body to free the floats. Where is the fuel pump located? on my 72 Chevota, I had lots of problems with it vapor locking, even when the weather was not particularly hot. I learned to wrap it in an old towel and pour ice water on it to clear the lock. I have seen this trick work for others, too. John

Thanks for the input guys, well i checked the built in filter in the carb and it did not look bad at all,but i replaced it anyways drove it for about an hour and all is good........so far, but i think it will come back to haunt me again, then i will move on to the internals of the carb or maybe just get a new one:mad: so till the next episode,Happy Holidays to all,
