Im a long time viewer, first post.
i have been searching for some time now.

I will try to be as specific as possible.
after being in hibernation for 3 years i decided to start working on my fathers 83 fj60. I cleaned everything up, and towed it to the local Toyota dealer to replace the rusted out fuel tank for free :)
. So after getting the cruiser back, I attempted to get it running.
Here is the problem. the carb gets fuel into the bowl, but the engine just cranks.
I checked for spark, and it was good. Also, if you pour gas straight into the carb, it will fire right up for a few seconds and die. could something like old gas clogged jets be the culprit? my dad says that the carb had been rebuilt after he purchased the truck. Is it time for another?

thank yall for the great site. Im here all the time!

if it hasnt run in awhile prolly gummed up. or just full of crud. 1st step is to check the accelerator pump operation. when the accelerator is depressed you should get a pretty good squirt of gas from your pump jet. if it just trickles out shes clogged up. a rebuild kit is a cheap, easy DIY job. also, get your hands on an FSM. prolly the cheapest route for a new FSM is Toyota Publications 1-800-622-2033.
also find em used on amazon.com. good luck:)

Does your carburetor have a glass window in the front so that you can see the gas level in the bowl? Is there a line in the middle of this window where the gas level is? If not, you may not be getting any gas into the engine. I had a problem with my installation of the re-called gas tank; they put a new but dirty one in. The dirt plugged up the screen in the fitting in the top of the carburetor where the steel gas line enters the carburetor horn.

thanks for that reply. i have the 2f service manual already. so i will check that acc. pump out tomorrow, and if it seems clogged i will start a rebuild/clean out.

i also saw that the rubber boot on the acc pump is torn. i am going to order one. is this causing my problem?

Heartworm, i have gas flowing into the bowl, and it stops in the middle of the window. it just seems like fuel is not flowing from the bowl through the jets. it has a new fuel filter, and i was in the process of cleaning out that screen when i stupidly shot it across the garage with compressed air . so i need a new one of those and that rubber boot. any suggestions on where to get these parts? could advanced auto get these?

thanks a bunch

For OEM parts, contact Cruiser Dan @ 800-432-6668, ext 8. He is out in NM, but offers almost cost on parts for "mud" members...be sure to tell him you are on "mud".

here is an update.

over the course of three days I dismantled the carburetor, and cleaned the junk out of it. There was lots of junk in the carb so i cleared out all of the jets, and valves. The accelerator pump wasn't in good shape at all. the spring had rusted through, and the plunger was pretty shot. so i replaced those parts (thanks to Steve's Offroad. it is nice having an offroad Land Cruiser specialist 5 minutes away from my house:)) I put it all back together with a GP Sorensen rebuild kit, and it started right up.

I think thats about as good as it gets for a 25 year old truck that has been sitting in the shed for 3 years.

What else should i change/replace on the truck after it has been in hibernation for that long?

Good job!
If I was resurrecting a rig after a 3 year deep sleep I would certainly change all the fluids. Both diffs, tranny & transfer. Engine oil of coarse. Power steering fluid.Give the entire cooling system a good flush (I got one of those adapters in-line so I can hook up the garden hose and run it). Probably I'd add some water pump lube to the radiator 'cause I might worry about the water pump bearing...Speaking of bearings, do you still have the smog pump? It's probably going to seize any day now. Might want to rebuild it before it does if you still need it.
How does the brake fluid look? I'd probably replace that anyway.
Is that enough to get you started?

Im going to be changing fluids here in the next few weeks. starting with motor oil. judging by the way my birfields look, im in for a rebuild. So when i get to that i will change the Diff oil. followed by tranny and t-case. I greased up my yokes and u-joints real good yesterday, so that is out of the way.

Im in Hamilton Co. Tenn., and we have to do smog tests here:crybaby:. So this weekend, im going to get it tested and hope for the best. My power steering isnt pissing yet, but since i need that air pump I may do a rebuild as pm. never know?

i will be back.
