Hello all,

I have a 78 FJ 40 that is having trouble idling. I replaced all of the suspect ignition parts and set the dwell and timing as best as possible. As long as I'm on the throttle it runs great but if I let it drop to an idle it quickly dies. The former owner converted the carb to a Rochester 2 barrel but I have a rebuilt Asian as well. I think the right thing to do is switch back to the stock Asian carb but I'm not sure if I have everything to do so. Could someone send me some pics of what the stock carb looks like installed? Is there a good instruction sheet somewhere? It currently has a throttle cable linkage but threads that I have read make it sound like the stock setup is more solid than that.

Any tips or suggestions would be great.

Thanks.

Before you tackle the swap, spend an hour with an old fart.

A grumpy old fart.

The kind that only works when he wants on what he want (old chevy man). The grumpy old fart that would rather talk than listen. Tell him you "heard he was the guy to talk to about a straight six truck motor with a gm carb". Listen, make him feel good, and one of two things may happen:

He'll tune it by ear/feel in about five minutes, and you're out $20.

or

He'll rebuild it in about three days (with the parts he still has on an un-labeled shelf) and you're out $75.

Then you can keep the aisin on the shelf for later.

Good luck.

I suppose the "old fart" method is one path you could follow, but I would suggest you search the threads for carb issues (like this one going on now: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/98395-carb-questions-1972-fj40-f-engine.html ) and fix the Toyota carb. Tons of info is available, including excerpts from the various factory shop manuals. My personal opinion, throw the 2GC as far away from your rig as possible. Don't hit the old fart though.
