Hey guys,

I just spoke to Garrett about some help I need with my '87 60. Time for a new or rebuilt carb for the 2F.

The shop it's at will outsource the rebuild for $375, plus labor. The turnaround on it is 2 weeks.

Anybody on the board have any leads on a low mileage or rebuilt carb for less? Since I'm in CA, it's got to be smogable, which sucks.

Any help or advice would be awesome, I'm in Santa Cruz, so it's not too far to ship a big piece of metal!

Thanks!

Boother

I didn't have any good advice for him except come here. I know some of you know about these carbs and some know the secret Jim carb guy, but I don't exactly what he does. Was his rebuild quote out of line? I haven't a clue and I don't know what rebuilt ones go for if you can find them. And for those of you that know Jimmy who was with my Dad on the last McGrew run, Boother is his son. Good family friends.

$375 plus labor? EEEEEESH! I'm assuming that's for them to buy a rebuilt carb and swap them out...? That's probably a going rate for a shop these days... I'd look into the 60 section here and find out a bout a carb from that Jim guy... :D Probably similar money, but you get something that's been built with love!

is there some reason 60 guys dont swap to 62 FI?
you could prob do a swap for that much.
carbs are uber gay

WORD!!

Sorry Boother I know nothing of the carb's on a 60, but like said before check out the 60 section here on 'mud. There is so good talent on this board.

Jim C is about that much if you pull it and ship it. Carbs are expensive but what isn't? OEM fuel injection pump for an FJ62 or FZJ80 not to mention injectors--$$$$$$..

So the shop will charge the $375 for the rebuild plus the labor it will take them to remove and reinstall?

Shop rates are about $75 to $100+ for a dealer.. I would guess that is at least a 3-5 hour job to pull and reinstall.

Are you able to pull the carb? If so you could send it to Jim C. for $400ish??? and he has a great reputation for rebuilding the carbs. I have "serviced" several carbs but I haven't had to change out jets or repair worn throttle pivot shafts.. I have just replaced gaskets, adjusted float and fuel valve, cleaned and replaced throttle pump and vacuum diaphragm for secondaries.. It isn't incredibly difficult if you are mechanically inclined and have a factory manual. I don't know if that is considered rebuilding.
For some reason non-cruiser mechanics seem to botch up the old school stuff- I'm not saying a good mechanic wouldn't do it right I just have seen several rigs that "pro" mechanics goofed up on..
Is it just the carb or are there other problems? Some mechanics just replace parts until it runs right and that gets expensive. Keep us posted.

I will jump in here for him. His cruiser is at the shop with the carb pulled I think. Its' $375 for them to have it rebuilt by an outside source. Then looking at about 1 1/2 hours to reinstall for him. He had been noticing a strong gas smell as of late and then went to get it smogged. Was running way too rich and diagnosis was a carb rebuild. Funds are tight as for most of us right now. I said he might be able to pick up a used one to get him by until work picks up or maybe used ones are as much as a rebuild these days, I don't know.

Yep, smog is a must unless we can convince him to coach a girls cross country team up here in Oregon :p

heading to Mudrak

Thanks for all the replies JSC!

I do need to get it smogged, and the guy I know at the shop said he could sneak it through, but the rig runs like s*** anyway.

Mudrak said he'd do it for the same price, and it's like going to a candy store to visit his place. I think I'm takin it to him next week; keep it in the LC family.

Funny Mudrak story- My tranny went, and I wanted to get the 5-speed put in. I called Gary, and he said he could start on it the next day. Obviously it wouldn't move forward too well, so I called AAA. My gold AAA card will tow 100 miles for free. Mudrak was 97.6 miles from my house. The tow truck driver had to tow it from San Jose-Sonoma, through San Francisco, during rush hour. He got there around 9pm, and dropped it off. I got a ride there a few days later to pick it up. Easy as pie.

Thanks again for the advice. Hope to see the club somewhere soon!

I think you need to sell it for parts at this point... I really want a 5 speed!

Mudrak is top notch.. Now you have to post a follow up.
