hello, this is my first post on this forum so take it easy on the FNG!

I've done a search for the carb cooling fan and found several posts as well as the link to another site that had about 150+ posts.

What I'm trying to find out is, there is mention of the elusive 5A fuse that lives under the dash. The posts that I've seen refer to the location being above the pedals. Now I think that those saying that were talking about fj40's. Does this also apply to the FJ60?

I've just spent a sh#tload of dollars on a smog issue including new intake/exhaust manifold and my carb fan is not working (although it was when it was with my mechanic), so I'm trying to work my way to the problem via the inexpensive way.

Any help is appreciated.

Chris

Long shot, but are you sure the little sensor wire that goes from the block to the fan is intact -- maybe it was disconnected when installing manifold or got melted by rubbing against hot manifold.

Not a long shot at all. It's very common for the insulation to burn off and allow the fragile little wire to ground, often intermittmently. If the wire grounds the "computer" thinks the engine is cool and the fan won't run. My bet is on the wire. The single wire connection at the manifold can be viewed from underneath looking up.

Off the top of my head...
If you simply disconnect the single wire to the thermistor (unplug the green connector near the fan) the "computer" will run the fan everytime the engine is shut down on the timer (30-40minutes) regardless of engine temp.

P.S. Welcome to IH8MUD Chris :flipoff2:

well go figure this, this evening after driving around this evening, the freeking fan turns on!! I jiggle the wire leading to from the fan to the exhaust manifold and nothing happened, so I have no idea why its working now, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

ps hey jim!

Jim, I am going to try the disconnection thing. I can always just hook it back up. Thanks!

update:

Well, i disconnected the green from the white, started her up and let it run for a while, turned her off... nothing happened. Maybe I will try it again after I drive to and from lunch.

It could be the relay - the relay is just a plug in module located above the brake pedal, Toyota part number 9098702004 labeled as "cooling #1" mine was cycling on and off and then quit, the new relay fixed everything for about $15.00.

I looked in the 60 for the fuse under the dash..........I found nothing so it am assuming it hooked to thru one of the normal dash fuses. Never got out the FSM to check however

when i was looking through the wiring diagrams in my Haynes, it appeared to be tied into the 5A Dome light fuse. can anyone confirm this  this is why i was asking the question about the fuse location in the first place. Thanks again for any info :)

chris

the carb cooling fan is definitely tied in to the 5A dome light fuse....

and I found it on my 82 fj40 under/behind the dash........once I saw it I recalled it didn't work when I got it.......blown fuse.

Hey guys,

Just have a newb question on the carb fan....couple of us were trying to figure out the purpose of the carb fan in front of Gumby's shop yesterday. I assume the purpose of this fan is to keep the carb or the fuel in the carb cool to prevent vapor lock? Or was this an emission thing? Does anyone know the cfm of this puppy? What I"m getting at is could this fan be used to keep engine bay cool in a 80 with supercharger? Provided of course it's wired to suck air out and the usual ducting/venting issues are worked out.

I just recently went through this myself. When i first got my rig, the cooling fan was dissconnected. With the fan DISconnected, if the rig sat for more then 10 mins after driving the heat of the motor would evaporate all the fuel in the carb and what not and it would take many cranks and pedal pumps to get it going again. Once i re-hooked up the fan and made sure it was working properly, it starts right up nice now!

What the fan does is, turn on right after you shut the rig off and cools the carb with the rest of the engine and keeps the gas in the carb from evaporating, that way it fires right up when you go to restart it! Took me awhile and a bunch of posts to figure this out but it works great now!

Hope this helps a little

good to know.

so would it matter when it did or did not come on?

mine comes on if i have driven more than 10 minutes or so...i don't know if this seems right or not, or if it should be more or less, or if really makes a difference. i have not had any problems with it, just curious.

Yes

Yup, that is when mine comes on as well. The truck has to get up to full temp before it comes on

yes, it makes a big difference!

thanks mangler

checked out your website, pretty cool...like the mods.

If the purpose of the carb cooling fan on an FJ60 is to keep fuel from vaporizing out of the carb bowl, what is the pupose of one on an FJ62?

How could a 62 have a CARB cooling fan, if it doesnt even have a carb???

That is kind of the point to my question. An FJ62 has the same "carb cooling" fan that an FJ60 does. Although I am not sure of its purpose.

i would like to know that answer too. i saw a 62 yesterday, archie's, and it has the exact same fan as the 60 does in the same location.
