Hello everyone!!
This is my first post here so once again a big hi to you all. Now for the problem. I have a 1991 fj70 with the stock aisin carburetor. After getting it rebuilt and having the mixture set a couple of times here, it seems to run fine. Timing seems to be the way it should be but the car puffs out black smoke when the pedal is fully depressed or when ever the engine is pushed hard under load i.e whenever the secondary opens in the carb i get black smoke in rather handsome amounts. The carb is also leaky. How can i fix this? Also what kind of fuel average figures should i be expecting from a 3f. Regards.

A leaky carb is a sick carb. Someone who knows what they are doing should have got it right the 1st time.
Black smoke is a sign of running too rich.
Does it run bad momentarily as the secondary opens?
My fuel consumption was rarely better than 16 mpg in imperial gals. Apart from pumping the tyres up,keeping it in tune and being thrifty on the pedal, there is not much you can do to improve it.
Fantastic engine in the sand if you can afford the petrol.;)

It only puffs smoke while the secondary opens, how do i set the mixture on that? cant see any screws on the outside. Also, what kind of highway speeds are 'normal' for this rig with near-stock size tires?
