Hello...

The fan that comes-on to cool the carb after running is not kicking-on anymore (It was fine before winter)

Can someone please point me in the right direction to tell me if it is the actual fan or something else? Is there a fuse, etc?

1985 FJ-60

Thanks everyone,

Dan

There is a fuse.Looking in my manual it shows the horn fuse. Look at the fuse door and check them all. There is a relay somewhere for it. Check to make sure the temp sensor is plugged in by the manifold. It is down under the brake booster. You could probably jumper out the the sensor if it is connected to test if the fan is good.

Also, if it's not the censor wired burned through, which it seems to be most of the time, it's common for the fan to need to be pulled apart and cleaned.

You just need to noodle around with it a little. Once you do, come back with more specifics and we can help from there - you've got to do the leg work though. :D

sensor under the carb

Make sure the heat sensor located under the carb is tight in the mount and that the wire is plugged in and still goes over to the fan.

There is a way to test the fan, I think you just unplug the wire from the sensor and ground it out good, the fan should come on when you trun on the ignitiion, (don't have to start it or have it be hot) If the fan comes on it means the fan is okay but the sensor or relay may be bad), I have had the sensor get loose in it's bracket twice.

Finally, if it has been really cold and you did not drive far it could be that the sensor did not heat up enough to start the fan, I've only had this happen on a 79 fj 40.

i had the same problem...fan was good...i wired it to a toggle switch for a while. then, i stole the timer from treeroots wrecked 60 (thanks mike) and now it works sometimes. there is a way to test the timer...like described above.

good luck...makes starting a bitch when that fan doesn't kick on.

as others said: most likey little ( 22 ga ) wire from harness to connector to sensor has burned.
you find 'connector' solid with little wire dangling in space.

Ground the wire ( best is 'jumper' to - on bvattery)
Fan should come on, don't need ignition on....

As far as 'didn't heat up enough' ( I admit, in FL it doesn't get that cold); I've found on 40 degree days, engine running for 10 minutes or more is enough . . .

fan does not automatically come on

Are you sure the fan is not working? Mine comes on only when its very hot out and never between September and June. My other 60 it seems to come on more often, but still randomly. I assume that there is some thermostatic switch that operates it.

Noah, yes, fan comes on after you shut key off - if it is warm enough under the hood.

On my 40 it comes on year round (CO winters = mildly cold)

I took my fan aprt on my 40, 1 piece of pea gravel had gotten into the squirrel cage and stopped the fan. So even when I tried running it direct to 12 V, it would not spin. I got the gravel out and it worked.

The fuse on my 40 was over by the timer, behind the air vent, under the glove box. 5A

Good luck.

Yeah... it could just have something blocking the movement of the fins inside the fan. Mine wasn't working and ended up being clogged with a piece of foam. Oiled it and put it all back in and it worked.
