Hello,

I have a question, Does the Canvak affect the windows when sprayed on? Should i cover the windows first then spray, or just spray it on, and then clean the windows after..

If clean after, should I use a special cleaner, or just a wet soft rag? This is for a Canvas top by the way.

I've searched plenty, but this is never discussed.

Thanks,
Mark

I have never heard of Canvak until today. I have been building covers for RVs and Tents for eighteen years. Canvak is made to protect COTTON which is what CANVAS is made from. Other woven fabrics used in lawn furniture and umbrellas and awnings and commonly called canvas are not canvas by definition.

First thing you need to do is to be sure of what your top is made from. If it is acrylic or a coated polyester you might look into Apco products for cleaning and preserving the fabric. Call them any way for professional advice. www.cleancanvas.com

Canvak is a chemical and has a strong chemical smell for a while. So based on that I would 100% tape off those windows. Just get some painters tape and plastic. Much better to be safe and tape them off, it will also take less time to tape them off then to clean them after.

I would also tape off the body to prevent over spray on that, once again mostly to avoid the cleanup issue. Canvak is really made for tents and tests do not have plastic windows, I guess that is why I am having a hard time goggling its effects on plastic windows, but better sage then sorry.

I believe 'Canvas' comes from the root ultimately derived from the Latin cannabis. A real 'canvas' would be made from hemp, and way more durable then cotton.

Mschliebs,
Any recommendations on a type/brand of fabric for a top? I've found a local shop that makes custom boat covers to make me a rear cover, but it seems there's so many options. There's rubberized on the outside, like military truck covers, and then there's some with a fuzzy outside, these are used mostly on the boat covers.

I have a oil soaked cotton military tent from the 60's and it's still in alright condition. But I don't think I want something that heavy and getting beat by the wind and sun all the time.

Sorry guys It's a Canvas top.. From OCD. I received it a while ago, but just now got it mounted.

i used canvak on my top from Ehsan. it works well. it IS smelly. i put it on with a rag. i avoided the windows.

What does Jim recommend? I personally did not like my experiences with canvak... pricey, smelly, and i did not see any truly positive (conclusive) results that it actually did anything.

EDIT: this was on an ehsan cotton canvas top

Soft Top

I would say contact JohnnyC or Alex ,SouthBostonFJ, they would have the answer regarding the best waterproofing treatment for your top.

Johnny's. Pm box is full.. so I posted the question here In hopes of the resident expert chimming in.

Jim always used to say follow Johnny's instructions for care...

JohnnyC has been really quiet for a few months. Not sure what's up with him.

Here's the thread he started on maintenance...

I personally have never used Canvak. A buddy of mine who has used it says that over time it will dry out the stitching so it's not good. I have no proof of this though. Meguiar's used to sell a great product called Canvas Protectant but its off the market for some reason.

I haven't searched but someone else must make something similar. I used their canvas cleaner on my OD green Paki top and it faded the color almost immediately.

Just a follow up.

I taped and covered the windows and sprayed the Canvak on this past weekend. There were a couple spots i didn't tape well, and the Canvak sat on the window corner for a while.

This is for the OCD top, but the Canvak does not affect the windows. I was able to just wipe it off with no ill-effects.

One thing I'm not to pleased about is the water-proofness of this stuff. I waited a day and a half to make sure it was dry. Then I sprayed the top with the hose, and it still leaks thru the canvas..
