I'm running stock suspension on a 96 FZJ80. Trying to decide between BFG KO sizes,295/75/16 or 285/75/16.

Should I go for the extra meat, and get the bigger tire? Will the 3/5" difference bring down enough power or rub enough to notice?

(Yes, I used the search function. Sorry if I inadvertantly made a faux pas, and thanks for any and all replies.)

Well if ya can't decide, get MTRs.
Cheers,
Sean

Did you mean 305/70 vs 285/75? Not familiar with a 295/75.

Nevemind. See you said AT's. Go with the 295's. Never heard of anyone 'round these parts say "you know, them tars is too small."

Yeah, BFG makes a weird 295/75/16 size in the KO. That's why I'm wondering.

And I'd get MTR's, but most of my driving is highway, and well, I'm just really partial to the KO's. I've had four sets, and never got less than 80k miles out of each set.

I'd go with the 285s over the 295s. The 295s are an odd ball size and if you run into a problem with a tire later you might have a tough time finding a 295 in stock. I ran the 33x10.50s and the first week I had them I put a stick through the side of one. It took 6 weeks to get that tire in stock. Granted it was during the Ford Exploder tire recall. But now I'm convinced to stick with the more common sizes.

I run the 295s and love them. But I have a decent size lift on mine. For hwy use I'd stay as small as possible without looking goofy.

I vote 285s based on price, availability, and fuel economy. The extra 7.5mm in height isn't worth the difference in price.

That's 320,000 miles! It would take me over 20 years to accumulate that much mileage.

I vote 295's... cuz that's what I have.

Now who wants to post up a picture or two of a stock 80 with 295's.....maybe i'm wrong but wouldnt that look a little dumb, makes it look like your trying to hard. I dont understand when i see guys with huge tires on a suspension that cant handle it. wouldnt 295's on a stock suspension limit your amount of articulation? I'm no the smartest on this stuff so thats why im asking, thanks

I'm not sure either.

A 285/75/16 tire is equivalent to 32.83".

A 295/75/16 tire is equivalent to 33.42".

With a difference in diameter of 0.59". Roughly 3/5 of an inch.

Does the 3/5" mean a noticable difference in power and rubbing?

Oh, and this question is just for posterity, I've already gone with the 285's, mostly for reasons of availability...

Then here is your answer

:flipoff2:

That was spoken/written like a true moderator. :D

The 295 was specifically developed for the Wrangler, by BFG I believe.

I too am amazed at you 80 owners who are trying to run bigger tires with a stock suspension. Why would you want a bigger tire that could potentially damage the truck or limit articulation on a stock suspension?

Jim

I vote 285's. All around most popular tire size and is cheaper and easier. And if you are stock than that is enough tire. Even if you get a 2.5 inch lift they are still enough. That is what im running and they look and run great! :D

Well, there you have it. End of discussion.

UHH, I have to completely disagree!!! My nitto 295's clear at full stuff all the way around and there is no limited articulation. What could it damage? I'm not sure where you got this idea......

FYI - I just had a 295 AT KO replaced under warranty because it disintegrated on the inside and would no longer hold air. That particular tire had been over the Rubicon at lowish (~15 psi) pressures but was never driven at speed at low pressure. I had the shop (America's tire) pull all the tires and check them. Just the one was bad, but it was real bad.

Just to add too, about your post in the china rear rotors. I think most here have to work on a budget regardless of the price of these vehicles new. I think nice tires that fit, maybe not work all that great is cheaper and easier than shelling out money for a lift and tires. IMO should just go with 305's, maybe even 315's cause now after my 2.5" lift my 305's look weak....I'm going to 315's as soon as I can convence my funders :D the 305's are worn out.

I made the mistake of trying to cross a small ditch in my 80 with 285 BFGs before having installed the OME. I ripped the left front flare off of my first 40th Anniversary. That's where I got the "idea".
