Can someone tell me the original MSRP

hi all,
this is my first post.
Long time nissan enthusiast, about to buy my first 4runner.

Looking at a 1985, 22re, auto. Really clean truck.
can someone who is an original owner of one tell me what they retailed for in 1985? i have been looking online for about 2 days. even called the toyota dealers. no help.
this guy wants 8500. and i want to show him he is nuts. no way i am paying that for a 25 year old truck. looked through the "what did you pay for your 4runner?" thread on yotatech and nothing over 5000 (all second hand of course)

Can anybody help me out? really want this truck.

You can't use the MSRP for a vehicle that is that old. This is why NADA and KBB don't go back that far. It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. I have seen restored FJ40's sell for over $50,000 but they certainly didn't cost that new. And without knowing the details and seeing pics, we can't advise you if the price is out of line or not.

There's an '88 Xcab in the For Sale section now with 8300 miles on it, the guy has turned down offers of $10K, I don't think that truck cost that much new either. Will he get it? Probably.
 
klf he probably paid around that, my buddy paid just under $10k for his 88 standard cab base model with no radio, and he had to pay extra for the rear bumper.
 
It is called 'supply and demand'. With every passing year, there are less rigs to be found still on the road. So if someone has a decent rig, and people want that particular rig, then the price goes up regardless of the original selling price, its current condition, or what the current owner paid for his rig. :beer:
 
it looks like it is in really good shape. it has less than 100,000 miles. mild lift springs up front, blocks out back. rancho shocks. new bfg all terrains. new brakes. all the interior panels are there. no cracks in dash pad. looks clean. claims some rock chips in paint, but nice overall.

at least this is what he says. have not seen the car in person yet. what is a good number?
 
only you know that, what are you willing to pay? what did the carfax turn up (if any thing) on it?
and really you need to look at it and drive it. so it is all up to you!
 
well, i am willing to pay little to nothing over about 5k. my current situation is i have an 89 pathfinder ready for sas. drive a 2006 honda civic daily for gas mileage. want to sell the honda( hopefully for 14-15k). take most of the cash and put in bank to help with down payment on my first house. use 5k and buy another daily driver truck/suv. since i have a pathfinder, the only other thing i was interested in was the first gen 4runner.
they get decent gas mileage. (read about 18-20mpg)
tow a boat (not possible with honda)
fit my dog comfortably( also not possible)
and its slicker than owl sh*t.

the carfax shows a minor accident. guy says it was from shipping. only a dent and that one of those "fix a dent" ppl pulled it out without damaging paint, so it couldnt be that bad. everything else checks out, mileage, vin....etc.

Rancho shocks are nothing special.
Blocks in the back? Run away or be ready to do it right. I would take money off for that alone.

Personally, from what you have so far described, I don't think this truck is anything special. No crawler gears, mild lift, no engine modifications, meh. $4000 max assuming it's clean and hasn't been hacked up inside or under the hood.

Just something to compare. I have a 85 4Runner (my Rig of the Month). DOA engine, 4" lift, ARB in the back, high pinion in the front with LSD, winch on good bumper, Stout Equipment bumper in back with tire/gas carrier, 4:1 transfer ... just to name a little. My interior in almost pristine. If, and that is a huge if, I was wanting to sell I would consider it a $8500 truck.

My 85 4x4 pu 22R 5 speed was $7995. Last one on the lot full of IFS pu's

California just bought it back for $1000. It retired with 425k on the clock.

One owner truck from start to finish.:D
 
8500's ridiculous for what amounts to a bone-stock truck, I would't pay that for anything from the 80's, maybe a 97-99 4runner. Get this thin inspected by a mechainic you trust, and everything he brings up, use it to haggle the price down to reasonable levels.

However, to compare Pappy, the interior on this truck was at least 20 times better than yours (from those pics). not that yours is bad, i would be happy with something like that. but this thing looked like it rolled right off the factory floor in 1985. there was not a scratch on anything anywhere.

but all is lost now, amidst my negotiations someone bought the thing for an undisclosed amount. so he probably got close to what he wanted. sucker born every minute i guess.

anybody have a clean unmolested 1985 for sale? lol

Hook up with your local TLCA chapter. Chances are they've got a mechanic or two running with them who may have a vehicle for sale, or some folks may be selling or have connections. That's the way to go, becoae other folks in your chapter will have an eye for these things, and would probably be willing to give you their opinion on anything for sale.

Whatever happens, buck up! chances are there's another 4Runner out there, sure it may not be as "clean" but that's just the candle on the cake. I know you really liked the last one, but personally I would have called it off the moment I saw the words: "automatic transmission."

If you ask me, an auto trans is just a hole in the center of your floorboards you dump money into. You have to fill it with fluid, and adjust it regularly, and replace gaskets, and flush it, and replace filters. Plus the damn things only get to about 40% efficiency:bang:

Contact A Toyota Dealer, (preferably the original dealer that sold the car New). Ask them Nicely if they would be willing to get you a Copy Of the Original MSRP, (That's "Manufacturers Original Retail Price). Have the Full Vin. #. (Vehicle Identification Number, (All 17 digits)) located lower right windshield, or inside the Driver door on the Door or the Frame. All older 4-runners were made in Japan your vin should begin with a 'J' if your 4-runner was made in Japan.

It will show Not only the Original Price but All the Original equipment!!

I Just did the same thing On my 89 Toyota. Usually the Parts department at the dealer can do this for you.
