It's on the speedo. My thumb and index finger are each on a piece connected by the wires in between

This piece comes out on the front and can be pushed, but to what effect, i have no idea

I do know its not the odometer reset. as for a handle throttle. That i hadn't considered and i bet you're right

Hand throttle was on the right hand side of steering column in HDJ81.

The thing on the Speedo is most likely the timing belt service interval reset.

It's set to trigger a timing belt replacement interval indicator light every 100k km, pushing the button in resets the indicator interval to zero.

Hand throttle is on the right because that's where the gas pedal is (I realized this has to be the case in all markets since there's only one hand throttle p/n and it's a short cable). The hole on the left is for a choke cable on carbureted 80s.

Yup, hand throttle is linked to top of the accelerator. Is only meant to lock its position after you've used your foot to set RPM

Not sure what engine you have...in my 1HD-T the button resets the timming belt light, it goes on every 100 thousand kilometers...the hole seems to be for the throtle cable, but my car's dash is different

Possible hand throttle on a LHD diesel 80 but my RHD dash has that hole too except it's blanked off.

On my (RHD) 80, the hand-throttle control mounts to the dash fascia on the RHS of the steering wheel. This is my 80's dash with the hand-throttle directly below the ignition key location.

The red light is not original - I used to know what it was connected to. Next time I pull the dash apart again (soon - I'm fitting a new GXL version of the combi switch assembly) I'll look at it's wiring to see where it goes. The thing immediately to the right of the ignition switch is the dash light dimmer control and like everything else original to the vehicle it looks pretty jaded.

That lower dash panel where the manual throttle sits is NLA.
