Can anyone recommend sandpaper type to rough up brake rotors?

The 97 has slightly glazed rotors (glossy look) and I roughed them up a bit when I had the wheels off for something else. Didn't last long so I must not have gotten them deep enough with whatever I had on hand, plus kinda tough to get the back sides with them on the truck.

I'll be pulling them to repack wheel bearings soon, so I'm going to do it again and want to plan ahead.

Can anyone recommend a type of sandpaper (garnet, oxide, etc) and a grit size to do this with? I don't have a wheel and will be doing it by hand. Thanks. Also, if anyone knows - what happened to that stuff they used to call "brake paste" that they'd smear on drums and discs that was kinda like gritty paste. It would rough up the surface as you used the brakes and quickly dry up and fall off - leaving nicely roughed up brake surfaces AND pads.

Thanks a bunch,

DougM

I had a glazing problem on one of my 4Runners. I used a 240 (I think) grit wet sandpaper lubricated with Isopropyl alchohol. Once I got the glazing off they were fine. Sorry about not knowing exactly the grit but this was 6 years ago. I just went to the hardware store and picked a grit that I thought was as fine as I could go and still get the job done in a hour or so.

The following is a cut & paste from this whitepaper on the StopTech website:

"If only a small amount of material has been transferred i.e. if the vibration is just starting, vigorous scrubbing with garnet paper may remove the deposit. As many deposits are not visible, scrub the entire friction surfaces thoroughly. Do not use regular sand paper or emery cloth as the aluminum oxide abrasive material will permeate the cast iron surface and make the condition worse. Do not bead blast or sand blast the discs for the same reason."

Of course they recommend blanchard grinding as the best option, but hopefully the garnet paper will meet your needs.

Excellent - thanks!
