Can anyone identify this broken piece from my 84 land cruiser?

Can anyone please tell me what this is? I found it while changing my oil after an offroad sesh.

@Banana that looks like a piece of the carb insulator.

The insulator sits between the carb and intake manifold. From the carb base it has a shield that extends toward the rear of the engine and towards the front. Poke around in there and I bet you'll find it.

Did you find it on the driver side of the engine?

Yes I found it on the driver side leaning against the exhaust pipe as if it had fallen. Thanks, I'll check that tomorrow. What could go wrong driving the truck without it?

If it is part of the carb insulator, it could be an issue in extreme temperature conditions i.e. really cold or really hot, but I doubt you'd notice it in everyday driving. I don't really know what purpose it serves haha. Let us know if it is the carb insulator.

It's the insulator/heat shield assembly that everyone is talking about. It goes between the bottom of the carb and the top of the intake manifold. The insulator (the part in the middle with the two large holes in it) serves as a thick gasket, protecting the carb from heating up while maintaining vac seal so that air doesn't leak in behind the mixing that goes on in the carb...

...and the 'wings' - the metal plate - is the heat shield...it keeps the heat that radiates off the manifolds (mainly the exhaust manifold) from heating up the fuel in the fuel bowl of the carb or in the gas lines leading to the carb, preventing it from boiling off...

It would appear that the piece in the image you posted above is, as Klinetime and others have suggested, is a piece of the heat shield on this insulator/heat shield assembly...wouldn't you agree?

Have you looked on your truck to see if you can identify where that piece came from? Just like a jigsaw puzzle, of sorts...

Yes I just found where it came from, it's from below the carb as a few have said. Could this be the cause of my very low idling problem?

OK, so you are experiencing a symptom of a low idle...what RPMs is it idling at?

You mentioned that you had recently been doing some off-roading...what were the conditions? Desert? Mountains? Through rivers?

It was pretty insane rock traversing up and down steep hills. The idling has actually improved after I did a ton of small things (oil, coolant flush, oil fliter, fuel filter, put in some carb cleaner). It used to not be able to run without the choke but now at least it stays running, just idles a bit below 1. I'm also now hearing some bad clanking when shifting gears. AND I found out after the fact that my 4 wheel drive is useless. Somewhere, somehow my front drive shaft was not put on and is missing. I have a feeling it was from my last gearbox rebuild, which was very recently done in another state. Mechanic denies that they forgot to put it on, but it's the only option that makes sense to me. So I was off roading, climbing rocks in 2 wheel drive. I thank God we didn't get stuck way out there.

Sounds pretty hardcore.

So what are you going to do about that front drive shaft? How far away is that shop, can't you take it back and have them install that front drive shaft?

idle should be 650ish. check timing is at 7* and then bring idle speed screw(base of carb facing firewall) in to get 600 or so. all things tuned right- even old- should be able to hold that. what ele are you at? Lo vac can be high ele or deep cam maybe and cause lowish or rumble-prone idle. a vacuum guage is a must have tool for diagnosis. 20 buck or so and tells you sooo much stuff...idle vac should be above 16.5". I pull about 15 at 4000 feet with a 262* cam... I run about 700 idle which is dialed up very close to the threshold of the idle circuit. the only other thing I can offer for carbs is, they suck...consider it a challenge.

contact Georg about a dshaft...

no matter who or how good your mechanic is, it's always best to do at least a visual once over after a mechanical servicing. Who knows,
he might of got a call from his dying brother, just before the last turn on your engine oil drain plug. 50 miles down the road your engine seizes.
It's easy to forget to torque down a bolt or connect a single wire out of fifty. Forgetting something as big as a driveshaft is suspect. There is a chance some other cruiser owner with shoddy morals saw the price of a new one at Toyota and decided yours was a better deal. It's being done with catalytic
convertor all over the place.

Could this be the cause of my very low idling problem?

So, expanding this theory out a little, what would be the causal relationship (cause and effect....if....then...) between this piece falling off and the symptom of low idle? In other words, if this piece falls off, then how would that affect the idle?

Where are you located? I have a stock '84 front driveshaft that was replaced when the H55f went in. Pm me to discuss if this will help.

Did you look in the clothes dryer? It might be with all those missing socks...

Ikid. Only because I find it so hard to understand how this might go unnoticed... I can tell if somebody's farted near my truck (not olfactorily) :slap:
