I am new to this forum and need to get my 80 out on an adventure.
Can a stock 80 (no lockers) handle the Pleasant Canyon/South Park Loop in the Panamint area of Death Valley? I see videos of stock height jeeps and raised 80's handling it.

I have no doubt it can, and I have no idea of the place you're talking about!

If other 4wd's are doing it, then yours can too.
The main thing I'd be looking at are tyres, possibly a lift and most of all, your driving.

People often underestimaste what their 4wd is capable of.
Chances are you're more scared of conquering a certain path than your truck.
Just have yourself a good recovery kit, Hi-lift jack and shovel are good.

I'd recommend going to the "Clubhouse" tab and posting this question on one of the California club boards. I did a quick Google search and there are some pics and trail reports available.

^^^ advice is solid. I don't know the CA trails but to give you an example, I drove 6 rated trails at Moab in my stock height 80. Some on the OEM Michelin LTX tires. Granted my truck is locked but like others have said, you'll probably chicken out before the truck does.

If your in need of tires up size to a quality AT type tire in 285/75r16 or even 295/75r16 and the truck will go a lot of places other stock trucks won't. No lift required.

Jeeps on it? Probably no sweat for an 80 with decent tires.

Good advice to find a forum or board with locals that know the lay of the land.

However, this would also be a good time to put the buddy system into effect. Take a friend and their vehicle. Traveling in pairs is a good idea in a place so remote and, well, named Death Valley. Safety in numbers and, usually, a little more courage. Just don't overdo the courage part until you feel more comfortable wheeling your rig.;)

80 through South Park / Pleasant Canyon

Thanks everyone I will check with the local clubs on current conditions. Not sure if I will have my sliders before I go.

South Park

I drove my 80 on that loop several years ago, no problem at all, it was a great drive. But since then two jeeps have gone over the side at chicken rock, breaking down the bank and narrowing the road even worse than it was. google "chicken rock south park". I ran across a post that thought there might have been a by pass built but who knows.

But not to worry there is plenty of wheeling there, you can still go up South Park and stay at one of the Cabins just below chicken rock and check it out or try Pleasant Canyon, Gohler wash, Race Track, Saline Valley.....endless possibilities.

Thanks scdunn.
The chicken rock does look a little scary. Got to trust your spotter. I heard it's better to go down it than up. I heard people say the "steps" below the cabins in south park canyon may cause rocker damage and the trees in pleasant canyon might do some pinstriping.
