So, just back from a short 5 day camping trip and figured I'd give a quick report on a new (at least to me) product that I tried out.
Bit of history first. Coming up to 2 yrs ago I had some major ticker surgery and of course the doc specified low sodium (not that I was ever one to need a salt lick), but looking at many of the various dehydrated foods gave one concerns of 'living' off the stuff for a week or two or ...
Things like Mnt House are pretty damn high - one meal and you're often over 50% of your sodium for the day.
So I started searching some of the products out there and checking out REI to see what was there and reading the labels.
What I found with my searching (started about 2 weeks before my trip) showed a lot of high sodium stuff - presumably to give 'taste' to their products.
I came across a company I had not heard of and visited their website to read the labels. Was pleasantly surprised to see most of their products were down in the 20% sodium content (some lower, some higher). Ordered a couple of their 'Summit Food Kits' and a couple of loose meals. Off of their website they had pretty excellent prices - sort of a sale, not sure if permanent or just the time of the year (less folk going camping due to weather).
So, with no further rambling, the company is called Good to Go and their website -> Dehydrated Camping Meals & Backpacking Food | Good To-Go - https://goodto-go.com/
Now, the good thing... even with the lower sodium content, the taste of the food was pretty damn good. A deeper flavour versus Mtn House etc. i.e. a flavour that wasn't just 'salt'...
Quite impressed and will be purchasing more of their product for future trips. It would be nice if these companies started producing their product based on 'tasty AND heart healthy' versus just a backpacking meal (you wont starve, but may have congestive heart failure instead).
So, any other folk here that have done research on low sodium (and tasty) and have some brands/products that they recommend?
cheers,
george.
