Started this new thread where we can discuss whatever comes to mind, just like we would do sitting around a campfire.

So first question: I just received a invite to subscribe to "High Country News". I have read the mag briefly and found it interesting but did note one article that was against expanding mountain biking trails. So I'm wondering if these writers are too green and maybe against motorized & mechanized travel. If that be the case I won't give them my $$$.

I have a subscription to HCN. They are, or tend to be, very green. That being said I find some issues very informative and some to be good for lining the cat litter box. I figure it's good to know what "they" are up to.

I'll be the first one to support our responsibility to being good stewards of the planet, but a hands off policy of nobody goes into the forest/desert/beaches is just stupid.

I can send you my copies so you can have a longer test drive of the publication.

Regarding campfires had an odd encounter with a green hummingbird this past weekend. Had one repeatedly come to and old/cold campfire spot and hover just above the ashes and probe them with his bill, all the while stirring up a small cloud of ash. I wish I had taken a photo but I was so intent on trying to see what he was after I never did.

I'd say it's an important part about being a well rounded individual. I subscribe to Mother Jones News as well as NRA's First Freedom, I've been a subscriber to HCN. When you read a lot of content the truth comes out in the details. I'm an NRA life member as well as a member of the ACLU. So many people engross themselves in one side of the political spectrum or the other and fall into the trap of believing everything they read. I am truly amazed at all the crap and hatred that each side trows at eachother. My views make it increasingly hard to vote in each election. Sorry for the soapbox but this seemed to be the least inappropriate place for it.

Well said, Jon. As a recovering politician, my take is that our biggest problem today is that we all enjoy our own set of "facts" received from slanted sources that tilt to "our" side. We can't even begin to consider that if others look at the same situation and reach a different conclusion, that doesn't mean they're bad people, only that they see things differently. As a society, we seem to have lost the ability to compromise or accept anything less than 110% of what we want and have become very accepting of the tactic of tearing someone else down to build ourselves up.
Happy to join you on the soapbox, appropriate or not.

I feel overwhelmed when I listen to all the opinions flying around. Just don't know what or who to believe anymore. But I do know who to doubt!

Speaking of campfires I really used my propane "Little Red Campfire" a lot this trip. It's cheerful flame was just perfect to drive the dampness away. Sat up past midnite one evening talking with a new friend. Off course being the only legal fire helped too. Funny the fire ban remained in effect despite heavy daily rains.

With our current fireban situation I will probably be adding one of these to my camping gear soon enough. Do you have the cooktop accessory? Do you like it?

Doug B. Has a Campfire in a Can. I was very impressed with it. Until seeing it I always thought the portable campfires were cheesy. Using it during a fire ban and having a USFS ranger come up to us with the intention of writing tickets as angry onlookers watched only to leave disappointed was priceless!

I think it's closer to 2x the cost. Doug's is better quality and puts out more heat but I think it uses a lot more propane. I run mine pretty low, more for atmosphere than heat. I also liked the smaller size.
