Found this on facebook. Cost is a little steep but sounds like a chance to do something different. I spoke with a employee about the trip this morning. Apparently it's the road that was used to access mt Mitchell before the parkway was built.

I plan on attending as long as my daughter doesn't have catillion that weekend. The group leader is supposed to contact me with more details.

I've ridden my mountain bike up that road from Black Mountain/Ridge Crest to the Parkway a couple of times. I have not been up to Camp Alice.

Spoke with the actual ride leader. It's an all day thing.
The lunch is a picnic style bagged lunch from a local restaurant. The trail starts on private land in Montreat. Ends on the parkway but we pick it back up inside the gate to mt Mitchell. Sounds like a lot of fun.

The man's name is John Buckner. He compared the trail to that of black balsam. Does this sound correct?

Like Black Balsam but not as tight. The entire road sesms to be paved with cobble stones. I don't remember too many sections with rocks as large as BB, but it's been a few years since I've been up there.

Lining up now. Lots of expensive rovers! About 4 Toyota as well.

Can you post the route you took when through? I'm interested in where the access is for the lower portion of the road.

Access point was literally inside montreat college. All gated private property. That trail gets to blue ridge parkway. About a mile south you hit mount Mitchell. Access to where the resort was is behind a gate at there office.

Portion at mount Mitchell. Is open to hikers but other than that only open to vehicles when the museum does there tour.

Brave man right there. Tore a heat shield off the exhaust and jammed another skid plate into the rear axle.

Nah... The range rover guys were all instructors from the landrover experience school. Told me about overland expo but that's about it. Did get compliments on the 60 though.

Eric Forrest went as well but didn't take any pics. The initial trail was pretty steep as you climbed to the top of the ridgeline.

From Eric, I'm guessing? People who drive Rovers start to act British after awhile and that means their insults are wrapped around praise. Bless their hearts.
