great news ..and great video clip
the video worked for me in Canada .
it was cool to here Barts enthusiasm and excitement in his voice while he thanks everybody and fired up his rig ,he sounded all giddy .
the smile on his face was priceless
. truck sounded nice. great work Tom

No matter where we're from we all feel like mates tonight! Good on ya!:beer::beer:

I've replaced the link (in post # 23) to the 1st news video so hopefully that'll work better now too.

A pretty cool news story, certainly better than the crud I'm used to seeing in the media here. As for dumb criminals, here's a good one........I grew up in a rural area near Bundaberg here in Australia, anyway, somebody was stealing cars, stripping them and dumping the shells on the side of the road around the area - then setting them on fire. Anyways, the bloke got found out after he dumped a shell off a causeway in a local creek, the police followed the drag marks from the scene along the road, into his driveway and into the shed, guess he forgot to use a trailer.:hillbilly:

 Over this way, we even recently had a bunch of armed kids hold up a store to steal icecreams. (Girls amongst them too....Says alot for their parents eh? And it says a lot for our society at large - which often forces both parents to work full-time to be able to put food on the table!)

That's great news! :bounce:
I guess pinching 40's over there will seem a little less attractive to scumbags like that now.

I'm hoping you're right Alex

I ran a hidden petcock in the fuel line of my 40. With the petcock in the off position, the
truck would run for .25 mile then shut off.
Just an idea.

Another good idea. (Perhaps too awkward to activate when parking for short intervals but certainly good for other situations.) :)

What a great story! Glad everything worked out and the cruiser is back home. Hope this is a deterrent to others that might think of stealing a cruiser in the future. Got me thinking about changing some of my bad habits and making it harder for someone to heist mine!

Damn, this just makes me even more proud to be apart of the TLC community. In the world today it is hard to get anybody to do anything that is not self serving. The overall response to this thread and story is inspiring. I hope that the police in NZ make sure that the thief has a long time in jail to think about what he did. Long live TLC and their owners.

.... (There could even be a magazine article arising from all this but that's not at all definite yet.)....

Early on in this thread I posted the above comment.

And that article did in fact appear .... but of course it had to be modified owing to the fact that the vehicle was recovered:

4x4Action1.webp

4x4Action2.webp

Kiwis who haven't heard of this mag before should take note. (I think it could be destined to become THE magazine covering our 4x4 scene.)

And Bart, Jamie (who lost his BJ42 in Wellington in 2005), myself and others ... are still waiting impatiently for news on what has happened to the perpetrators of this crime.

Perhaps the police only nabbed a "receiver" here or perhaps they got the whole gang of car thieves? At present we don't know.

Whatever the case, we will be pursuing this (and if necessary demanding information under the "Official Information Act") if nothing appears in the papers (in the way of convictions etc) within the next couple of months.

The people who stole this cruiser were professional car thieves! (It was not done by "some dimwit who just made a silly one-time mistake".)

The wheels of justice or slow everywhere in the world it seems.

I will inform you all of the ultimate outcome of course.

I'm reviving this thread now because it is 3 months since Hohepa (Bart's 1984 BJ42) was recovered and no-one (that I know of) has heard a dickey bird about any prosecutions/court-appearances relating to it.

Must be time for asking a few questions eh?

Meanwhile I have taken some extra steps on protecting my own BJ40 that I thought I'd share.

I decided against using the acid paste (although I did buy some) to etch my licence plate details on my glass. Instead I used a dremel-type tool that I already had lying around:

Security6.webp

Security7.webp

With this tool I was able to do a neater job (I think) and engrave the details deeper into the glass to make them much more difficult to polish out.

So that's the first thing I've done to piss off the low-life scum in this country.

I actually engraved ALL my window including the windscreen/windshield, and was even thinking of doing my mirrors too  .......But I resisted that urge. (I may have lost my marbles but I don't suffer from paranoia. Or do I? Maybe the next post will help you decide?)

Now if the scumbags have my vehicle stolen and stripped down and leave just one bit of glass intact enough for my licence plate details to be read ...... they may still be able to be nabbed by Mr Plod. :)

Then there is my pedal lock (to greet the scum when they've broken in, removed the steering lock, smashed the ignition, and are getting ready to drive it....):

Security4.webp

Security5.webp

That should slow em down somewhat eh?

...... Now what else can I think of................:hhmm:

BTW .... Am I really now paranoid on top of all my other problems?

I think you have every right to be concerned Tom, especially when it seems criminals have far too many rights these days. They should actually have no rights. Rights should apply only to honest people. Criminals forfeit their rights by their actions (well at least in a society that has actual justice).

Love your pedal lock! (another project for me) All you need to do now is rig up a few sticks of dynamite so that if they do get past all your security measures it renders the parts useless for sale

one more layer of protection that I use

nothing is fool proof but it slows them down... locked in reverse

Or "blows the perpetrators to smitherines" ..... Now that's an even more enticing thought Alex :D

Cool idea Bennet. Maybe I can do that too

(Scum are obviously being bred in Utah too.)

There were literally hundreds of New Zealanders involved in the search for Hohepa and people (and I'm in touch with one of them who lost a BJ42 in 2005) who lost 40-series cruisers to thieves in this city in recent times want to know if these same people took theirs.

So in this case I believe the NZ police have a duty to inform the public of the outcome. .............

Here's part of Bart's Email to me this morning. (We'll see how he gets on.)

Well I've just now finished a conversation with the detective involved in the recovery of Hohepa. (Yeah. I don't give up easily.)

No police prosecutions are in the pipeline for this specific crime. (The theft of Hohepa.) !!!!!!!!

And no doubt this news alarms you just as much as it did me when I was first told it.

On the bright side, I'm told that "40-series cruisers" were not the specific target and that Bart's vehicle got taken purely because it caught their eye (as they were looking for prospective theft vehicles).

So make sure you have a visible anti-theft device fitted if you leave your 40-series cruiser parked anywhere ....even where there are lots of passersby. (And I think this advice applies to owners in almost every country.)

And another piece of good news is that the perpetrators shouldn't be considered as having got away with this deed because the wheels-are-in-motion concerning them and higher-level crime/investigations/prosecutions.

I do have confidence in the NZ Police force. (From my experience, even when individuals within the police exercise poor judgement - those in higher authority will attempt to prevent a re-occurence even if they can't intervene in the process initiated/omitted by that poor judgement............... But I'm not saying any poor judgement was involved here... I'm not clued up enough about police operations to have an opinion in that regard. )

Sorry for the dismal ending to this thread.

BTW. I was also told (in response to my question about it) that the recovery was the result of police efforts rather than our efforts (Facebook + ih8mud + posters + etc) :hhmm: .....

Hello Tom,

Some things are the same everywhere. Especially the police and the legal system.

Forgive me if I sound too radical, but the only good criminal is a dead criminal.

Thank you for your advice on anti-theft devices.

Keep your 40 safe.

The only time you will see the legal or justice system up in arms about "criminal" behavior, splattering their justifications for this all over the news (ad nauseum), is when they can collect revenue from such activities. As criminals usually have no money, that only leaves the hard working honest people to prosecute and extort $$$$ from.
