Hey folks,

My cat converter has given out and needs to be replaced on a 1999 LC with 206k.

Searched the forum high and low, but not seeing any posts by California LC drivers replacing their cat with an aftermarket replacement. I found one by Magnaflow that is advertised as a direct fit and 50 state legal:

Magnaflow Catalytic Converters - 50 State California Legal

Any experiences with this one or any other aftermarket ones that have worked in California specifically?

The OEM replacement is $1,619.18 which is just not palatable right now.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

In my experience, aftermarket cats last about 2 years before needing to be replaced.

I used a similar one on my 4Runner. I killed the dying OEM one when I rolled it and it filled with oil. So far so good. Last smog (about 6 months ago) was the best smog numbers I've ever had. It's only been installed about 18 months so I cannot speak to the longevity

Even if it only lasts 2 years, that is 6 years to equal the price of the OEM option.

FWIW, I would go OEM. Or maybe this will last 2-4 years and start saving up for the OEM replacement at that time.

I hear you, I got an aftermarket recommended by a mom and pop muffler shop. It passes smog in all 50 states for about 500 bucks. I'm not home right now but tomorrow I'll pull the invoice and it should have all the info you need. Passed last year and the guy said it would be good for 5+ years maybe longer.

Although not CA I just had both of mine replaced for $367. We'll see on longevity but at that price worth a shot.

@92LXAZ how long did your catalytic converters last? Where did you get them? Would you do it again?
