Spent sat night at the lake, getting used to the new to me Kayak and Luka. I really wanted to get Luka used to Kayaking. This was the perfect place, and the weather was great. This lake has a decent potential for camping and Kayaking but I need to figure out how to camp on the east side of the lake where not many were camping. I seem to recall coming down from the Palomas Gap from the mountains to the east of the lake, then going through the Rio Grande before jumping on I-25. So, there is a way to access the East side of the lake, perhaps drive past the lake on I-25, then look for a road that heads east? Anyway, it need to be explored as there are lots of trees (last pic shows this) on the East side that I saw from my camping spot.

Just before the village of Arrey on the east side of the road is a tall repeater, turn left on that road then left, then right and left again and your headed to the east side of the lake.

It is also the loop road that will take you all the way around the Caballo’s and come back to the interstate at exit 51.

ok, that helps, thank you.

For cooler kayaking fun and trees for shade I would recommend the river above caballo. There are a few place with river access around las Palomas with grass and trees…

the river between Elephant Butte and Caballo?

Yep. Closer to Caballo than the Butte

Caballo Lake, NM is home to the bark scorpion. This species is toxic enough to ruin your camping adventure. They are great climbers (any surface but glass). Check your gear, shoes, clothing, bed rolls etc. Before leaving your campsite, check your vehicle and gear for stowaways. Poison Control phone number: 1-800-222-1222.

good info, thx.

Rocks instead of sand? I like it better than Elephant Butte already.
