heads up, the newer cabs use completely different heating, wiring and dash configurations so make sure you have a source for these parts as they are not easy to find nor are they cheap.

Tracked down an 04 that might be suitable
I am trying to figure out how invasive it is to fit the h55 in

I can take a picture for you to show you how far off the H55 sits in the 79 cab, as I still have mine sitting in there. It wouldn't take much work, but you have to cut the floor up to move the shifter opening forward by like 4 or 5 inches.

you never did respond to my email from yesterday ...

Never got an email, but I am assuming you are talking to someone that posted above my post? :hillbilly:

Have you done this? When I looked closely at how the gearshift went through the floor on a 79 series,it appeared to have the hole in the same place as the older models with the H55F and the transfer case had extension on the linkages.

The other problem with fitting the H55F to the 79 series cab is it is much shorter over all and the crossmember will interfere with the trailing arms for the front suspension.
I guess you could have a special crossmember fabbed up.

Hey Rosco, Yes, my original plan was to put an H55F into the 79, and I was aware the cross members would be in a different location, just thought I would make a custom cross member. Then when I actually dropped it in, found out the shifter comes out the 4 or 5 inches forward compared to the R51 tranny that originally came with it, the transfer shifters are the same, but would have to cut up the floor. So my plan now is to pull the H55F and clean up the R series tranny that came with the truck to stuff back in and won't have to hack up anything.

Yeah i am curious to see if its still in.
I know Bj70cruiser is going to give me a fairly detailed report on what happens with his. Something to consider:meh: I hate doing something like that. I wonder if the plate from the 75 could be modded to accommodate the 79.

As promised here is the H55F sitting behind a 1HZ in a 79 cab. enjoy :hillbilly:

Yeah I think if I knew this back before I did all the work undercoating the truck and all, I might have just chopped away and built the custom cross member. You can just see the heater there infront of the shifter location, I didn't really try eyeing up the room for shifting, but I think you could probably make it work no problem, even if you had to bend the shifter a little.

A little hacking, A little chopping.

Here's my 79 cab on a 75 chassis with the H55F. With factory body mount bushings. The transfer shifter is in 4H and hits the body in 2H, so this will have to move forward as well.

I plan on giving the truck a 1.5" body lift and using the 75's bolt on transmission cover spliced into the 79 to mount the rubber boots to.

The 75 series shifter has a lot more bend in the stick than the 79 series r box so I'd guess it'll miss the heater gear.
