Hello, I've looked for similar issues to this one but am unable to locate one that is the same... But I'm sure someone has already dealt with this before. When I'm at low idle, with a turn signal or windshield wipers on, I get a rattling/buzzing from the steering column and ignition. Rattling can be felt in the ignition and column. I'm thinking it's a bad ground causing voltage to go somewhere it shouldn't... When I rev the engine, it doesn't make the noise. Please pardon the dust from Windrock Park.

Here is the video, sorry the sound doesn't come through very well...

That is the strangest noise i have heard coming from a steering column. It doesn't sound electrical. Have you tried removing the steering column clam shell to see if you can better locate the sound?

Not yet, but that's a very good idea. It's definitely related to electrical since it is intermittent when electrical load is applied (like when the light from the turn signal comes on or the windshield wiper is engaged). I'd first thought I had a bad ground somewhere and voltage was being sent to the ignition cylinder...

That sounds to me like a relay is struggling to hold a ground and is starting to chatter. Check you ground wires under the dash (find your EWD in the FSM) and check where the ground wires are. I know there is a metal plate under the column that has ground wires attache to it.

DAMN YOU!!!!!!

I just noticed this on my 93 yesterday! SONUVABITCH!!

i have that same noise on my 91 FZJ80. only when i press the left turn signal to far past the point where it turns the click on.

91 FZJ80? You mean FJ80.

yes. new to the land cruiser world. still looking at a sticky that differentiates the chassis and engine codes by year. thanks for that

No problem. The different models are named based on their body engine then body

FJ80 references to the Mighty 3FE motor and 80 body

FZJ80 references to the inferior 1FZ-FE motor and 80 body.

Also by year, the 91-92 are FJ80 with 4.0 L 3FE engine and different transmission than later years with drum rear brakes and semi-float (SF) rear axle.
93-94 are FZJ 80 with 4.5L 1FZ-FE engine OBD1 and drive train components (4 Disc Brakes and FF rear axle) (FF=Full Float) different interiors than later models.
95-97 are FZJ 80 with 4.5L 1FZ-FE engine OBD2 and drive train components (4 Disc Brakes and FF rear axle)

The head gasket issues you read about are for the 93+ model years.

The ones that are REALLY slow are the 92 and earlier models with the 3FE engine.

@LS1FJ40 still thinks slower is better...........

Now, depending on the COLOR of your LC,..........THAT will makes ALL the difference.

Not all, but most 93-95 models have 4-wheel Disc Brakes, and Full-Float. There are early model 95's that are still ODB1. This all applies to US Spec models.

Thank you for the addition!

Oh my..........a 3FE in Burgundy........Let the flaming begin!

You'll have to ask @LS1FJ40 for how much oil to add......

The Guru of your model is @jonheld . If you have any issues, SEARCH first, then ask him, then LISTEN and follow-thru.

Good Luck!

Burgundy?!?! The second worst color for an 80. Uff Da!

7.8 qts of oil.

Jon Held knows everything about the 3FE. I know a little (very little). But I'm vigorously passionate about it being the best petrol motor in a Land Cruiser.
