Hi all, longtime lurker in the 80 section and have been looking to add a 100. Found a 2000, 135k, original owner, no accidents, clean title. Has records, needs tires. $10.5k decent? Thanks

HMalice~ $10.5k seems pretty reasonable if the truck is in good shape, well-maintained, and no rust.

Make sure that the 90k service (timing belt) has been done, and make sure you take it on a long test drive. Check fluids to make sure they are full and clean.

Tires are no big deal, if that is all it needs. Why is the original owner selling?

I have a 2000 LC w 140k and I am very happy with it.

quit taking this personally. Face, the majority of people who have had tranny failures owned a 2000 year land cruiser. Fact, Toyota changed manufactures of certain tranny parts mid year and the failures stopped. Fact, bees can smell fear

Goat I'm with ya in thinking there's a possibility of higher rates of failures for certain parts on certain years but once you start deliberately and unashamedly start throwing "fact" out there, then the right thing for others to do is ask you to validate your statements.

I think you leaped to some assumption in this statement: Face, the majority of people who have had tranny failures owned a 2000 year land cruiser. More accurately you might say, Fact, the majority of people who have had tranny failures, AND are members of this forum AND chose to speak up about, owned a 2000 LC.

Also, cold temperature whines aren't an uncommon thing with the LC/LX. The normal cause is from the xfer case & is not something most Mudders are worried about.

Bees may be able to smell fear but we don't need fear mongering on Mud either.

Taomca02 - hope you're still reading this many posts later. Dont' be as worried about the whine if it's related to cold starts and the xfer case. Plenty of posts here on Mud to discuss the subject.

I think mud is a pretty damn good cross section of people who own land cruisers. If i remember correctly Beno stated once that Toyota admitted to known tranny problems during a section of the 2000 year. I could be wrong, but i don't think so.

Why anyone would buy a land cruiser with a tranny or TC whine is beyond me especially when there a lot of LC's to choose from out there. Sure extreme cold weather can cause it to whine, but it takes only a few minutes of driving for it to stop. Taomca02 lives in MD, i don't think the weather has dipped below 35 degrees there yet.

i have no issues if someone else buys a 2000, hell i won't even mention the issues with the exhaust leaks the 2000's have. You just have to feel comfortable with what you have and research and make a decision you can live with. no biggie, i personally wouldn't buy one.....that leaves more for everyone else.

lol...im not trolling nutten....my opinion. take it or leave it, couldn't care less.

although it's funny that the people butthurt are the ones who own 2000's.

pre 2000 or buck up and get later model?

I've been scouring craigslist in the local area and my wife and I are hoping to look at a couple of 100 series in the local area.

They all cost about the same, have the miles, and services but some are 98-99 and the others are 2000-02.

I know in 2000 atrac took the place a rear locker. I had an FJ Cruiser with atrac and loved it but I also had front and rear lockers and they had their place as well.

Can anyone with experience help provide any information to help? I read Romer's post and I understand the fundamental differences between the model years but because I'm looking at pre-03 I though I'd throw this out there.

Thanks in advance.

98 and 99 tranny's are more sound. I don't remember seeing a failure reported on these yet and they have been tested a few years longer. Sometime in 2000-2001, the tranny failure rate has increased significantly from the usual Toyota ppm standard.

99 has the rear air (std over the 98) and a rear locker (option), which will probably do better than Atrac offroad.

I think its more than the 2000's with this issue, why point out 2000 year, is it because the op asked about a 2000? If so
then we should point out ac issues as well?

Is it primarily for off road use? Will it be a baby transport?

ATRAC and VSC will serve you better with on road safety and snow/ice conditions.

If you're going to have young kids then an 01-02 may be the way to go. It'll have LATCH connectors and tether anchors for car seats. (I think the 01's have em)

Agreed. VSC and ATRAC is the way to go for dicey on road stuff.

no the reason you see more 2000 LC tranny issues is because they changed manufacturers during the year. They discovered there was a defect in the parts they were using from one of their manufactures, which they decided to use in 2000, and switched back to using Araco and the problem went away. the question is, which tranny do you have when you own a 2000? Some of the trannys went at 30K, some went at 65K and some went over 100K. You just don't know. But the common denominator is when they switched back to Araco the problem went away.
Are you confusing Araco with Aisin? Or am I confused? I didn't think Araco made any A343F transmissions.

Well i have my plane flight booked, $50 , nice to have fam with flyer miles, headin to denver this tues, plan to check out the rig and then head back to calif wed am. I was worried about the weather but everyday i check it looks warmer lol - like 40's and sunny next week.

I plan to break it up into two days of driving trying not to drive at night etc, besides gettng water and bringing my snow gear and hiking gear would you recommend any other items? I plan to go to salt lake via 80 through wyoming or 70 through colorado. From salt lake take 80 back to calif. If i go wyoming 80 then stay in evanston or make it to salt lake. I know the rig has been i co its whole life and the fluids are right, he just took it in for a service oil and fluids so its ready to go. I guess staying at a motel the LC will be outside and in the freezing temps at night any issues i should think of before i start in the morning?

Should be a good trip to check mileage, wish it was in the summer and id bring my fly rod and take my time gettin back :)

This is the rig, Ebay link

I wouldn't worry about any cold start issues (not to mention it's supposed to be like 55 degrees all weekend). I'd suggest taking I-70 through the Rockies, it's a great scenic drive. You'll probably run into some snow at the the Continental Divide and Vail Pass.

Hope the truck is everything you had hoped for, enjoy the trip.

Thanks, the truck should be as i expect or i will be flying back... He assured me if it was not what i expected as presented then i'd get my $500 back. I've not bought a lemon yet and have a "fuzzy" feeling about this one. But i know people's clean and great is sometimes different than mine - lol. i used to work body and paint so i'll be able to spot out any fixes asap.. i'm ok with fixes if done correctly but typically there is always a tell tale sign. He assured me there has been no work on the body. But like the last second owner rig i looked at i pointed out several things to him that they didnt even see after owning it 6yrs in that case.

I thought about wy route as evanston has a fireworks open all the time, sounds odd but since my fam moved from montana to oregon i'm low on stuff... i only do it on new years as i'm in such a dry hot place and can't in the summer... But i know Wyoming roadways are probably not as safe as colorado's and weather/wind can be an issue.

1999's have had 3 reported failures here on MUD. 2000 is definitely the worst year, but tranny failures span the range from '99-'02 - at least here on MUD. Not enough data to specify a particular build date range as suspect, but given the +/- 1-ish year range, there probably is no "safe" range, based on build date.

Year Estimated Tranny Failure Rate
1999 0.47%
2000 3.71%
2001 1.68%
2002 1.27%

more gory detail here... https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/501772-2000-trans-status-2011-update.html#post6822293

'99's seem to have their own issues, higher incidence of brake booster and front diff failure - both pretty pricey, but not quite in the realm of a reman'd tranny, unless you happen to have both fail.

Anyway, I'll be searching for another 100 soon, and I will be basing my decision more on condition and accessories ratther than year, and will likely buy in the '99-'03 range. Every rig has flaws, including Land Cruisers. None of the frequencies of these items mentioned would dissuade me from buying the "right" rig.
