Hey y’all! Haven’t posted in a while as I’ve scratched my vehicle itch with sports cars. I now own two 1998 Mercedes SL500s which have been a lot of fun but visiting Colorado I’m very inclined to buy something I can take on a trip out here and do most of the major trails, especially those surrounding Telluride. Right now I’m wanting to downsize to two vehicles but still have a good daily, fun “overlander” and a sports car. Since I do landscaping and buy old cars often I need a bigger SUV capable of towing. Right now I have a 2008 Tahoe 4.8 2WD with 110,000 that was practically given to me it was such a deal. I love the car but being 2WD it’s unusable if I ever need to pull a trailer off the road for work, and it only tows 4,500 cause it’s the light duty model with VERY tall gears and relatively little torque. I am wanting an LX570 to be able to take on trails out in Colorado and even LBL near me, I want to tow with it and use it as a daily when the Mercedes is broken which is unfortunately very often.

I’m looking at something 2008-10 with around 150,000-200,000 (well maintained like most are) for around $18-21,000. What mods can I do to it that won’t compromise its functionality as a daily but will make it capable enough for trails like Imogene pass? Is there a different vehicle I should be considering that may better suit my needs? I look forward to y’all’s input!

I think you've landed on a great option. The LX is a swiss army knife that can do all that exceedingly well.

Get a well maintained early get 08-10 LX570. Slap on 295/55R20s. And reap.

There's options well beyond that if you're so inclined. Take a look at the links in my sig.

I have not seen a well maintained 200 for 18k with less 200k miles.

$18k is usually a northern truck that needs everything.

Glad to hear it! Im a newbie as y’all can tell… what do you mean by “and reap” and “my sig”? Thanks for the input!

My research has shown me the same. I am looking for a truck in about a 250 mile radius over the next year and I find some excellent deals on marketplace so that’s where that number came from. Would there be any upside in going to a 2011-15 with higher miles?

2013 was the model refresh. You get the weird led dots upfront and hids. That was a con for me. On the plus side you get better seat cooling and radar cruise.

I would get the best maintained version you can. I would expand your radius too.

So maintainable over miles? Makes sense for these!

I have a 2015 LX570 with 90K miles for sale! Probably more than what you are wanting to spend though.

The “sig” is his post signature. If you are reading this on a phone, turn your phone sideways and it will show up at the bottom of his post.

“And reap” He just means there’s a lot of things to modify to get towing and off road gains. His truck is built out with very similar goals to what you outlined. So read through upgrades to see ones you might want to do.

Sorry for the poor wording.

Many of us use the truck in the way you intend to. It'll work beautifully in that role. By reap, I mean reap the rewards of a incredibly capable truck box stock, with or without mods. A basic 33" tire upgrade, and the built in 2.5" lift on demand, will have it do most all of the trails in the area.

I've taken my car much further for the hobby and it's not required by any means. But if you have an itch to go to 35s, with almost 6" lift between tires and suspension, while still towing 8k, look at the link in my signature. They may not show up depending on the device you're using to browse so I'll link my build thread here:

The daytime running lights and hids were one of the primary reasons we got our 13+ LC 🤣

08-09 didn’t have built-in Bluetooth audio streaming, which is a deal breaker for me, personally.

and radar cruise.

I told my friends that so they didn’t double check and ended up with a 13LX that doesn’t have it. I couldn’t believe it was an option..

Same. Also updated MFI in the cluster you are staring at all the time.

Around here, 200k or less in good condition is a $25,000 truck for starters. I haven't seen anything under $20,000, even a high-mileage dog.

But the LX seems good for your use case. Solid tow rig. No mods necessary except wheels and tires (or at least tires) and some upgraded headlight bulbs lol. AHC will give you the flexibility you want to drive it across country and hit the moderate trails and better for towing than a conventional suspension.

It's a notable detail but with the availability of so many easy plug and play aftermarket solutions, it 's shouldn't be a deal breaker.

I’ve done that on a number of vehicles and can say from experience those solutions are rarely integrated as well as the factory stuff.

In general, I agree. Specifically, using a GROM-USB3 adapter with an '09 LX570 has been nothing but great, including high quality audio streams. If the OP is interested, I even have one for sale. Frankly, BT is barely acceptable as a modern solution (which is why I have it for sale). A large screen with native apps is the way to go.

Thanks for all the responses! I am trying to sell off a Mercedes and then seriously begin my search. Makes me sad at the prospect of selling my Tahoe as it has been absolutely flawless and I enjoy it a lot so I want to make sure to replace it with something great. I wanted to pose the question, is there a more practical option in the same sphere? It looks to me that an LX470 with sub 200k miles and clean costs only a couple thousand less than a similar miles LX570. The Sequoia and Tundra 4x4 with the 5.7 both seem to be the same price as the LX570. The GX460 seems slightly cheaper but I’m not sure if it will command nearly as high a value 5 years and 70k later. What are y’all’s thoughts? Seems like the LX570 is the bargain of the bunch.
