the transmission shop is giving me a rebuilt th350 with a 12/12 warranty for $325 with no core charge. good deal eh. but they want to know what converter i want and what gears i'm running. what converter do i need and how would i find out what gears i have? would i open the diff cover and tell somehow?

thats a pretty good shop askin about your gears, most dont. its a personal preference and if you havent had much exprience with different stalls i would suggest keeping a stockish stall.
high stalls generate heat and low stalls put alot of stress on the tranny and internals.
i dont know what rig you have, 4:10 was the norm till the way late 70's and 3:70 after that.
i would talk to them about stalls, in particular staying around 1300-1700 rpm.

Good advice from Rhino. His most important point to consider is heat. I wouldn't consider anything above about 1200 unless you have good tranny cooling. The main reason for high stall speeds is to get into the powerband of the engine before you launch the vehicle. On trails and in traffic this is less of an issue. STILL, just for fun tell him you'd like a 5500 stall just so you can watch his face.

Yes! 5500 stall...and then set your rev limiter to 5300, and wonder why you have a miss, and don't go anywhere...

Anyone else ever been to Dresser over Memorial weekend....
