Looking into bush wires for my Tacoma build. Can only seem to find Rover sources for complete kits, but really all I need is cable since I can do the rest with acquired parts and pieces from marine hardware. Anyone else done this build on a Tacoma? Would love to see how it shapes up.

Also, anyone know rules about running a vehicle with these installed? I don't imagine they're exactly "legal" but considering all the other stuff I'm running on my Toyota, cops don't seem to care. I think they kinda dig it.

Thanks in advance.

You can buy stainless steel cable at Home Depot.

Yeah I figured as much. I was more looking for a visual to see how it looks on a Toyota vs. a Rover. With the more sloped windshield of the Toyota, I wasn't sure how it would turn out.

Interesting that he just wrapped the steel cable around the bull bar! I'll probably neaten my up a bit so that the cable doesn't rub on the bar, but the concept is there. Looks good. Thanks for sharing.

You might also want to add some kind of spring in there to absorb some of the shock from heavier limbs.

I've run vinyl coated cable in a similar fashion as Johnny without any issues. I though about using a spring as well but it'll give a branch something to catch on and flex quite a bit. Reasonably taught but not bow string tight seemed to work best for me.

Oh crap what was that? Oh, don't worry, that's just the CB antennae I forgot to move away from the front of the limb risers, happens all the time.

Cripes I hope John moved that promptly after that writeup. :popcorn:

I've got a shopping list for my next trip to Lowes/Home Depot. Basically I need:

* 8 Stainless Thimbles
* 2 Stainless Turnbuckles
* 2 Stainless Marine Rigging Toggles for roof rack
* 2 Stainless P Clips for roof rack
* Two ten feet sections of 5mm stainless braided wire rope

The plan is to have 2, 3 foot sections of rope connected by turnbuckles to 7 foot sections. I have some bull bar mounts on the way from Australia, so the rest can be sourced locally. I don't like the thought of welding or drilling onto the bar or rack so everything will be bolted on. I think it should look pretty rad when done. I'll post pics as I get parts. But for starters, here's some pics to go along with the list above, and yes, I stole these off the 'net:

I've got a set of 'temporary' ones I use on my Tacoma, they can install between my ARB and my front-runner rack in a matter of minutes and are stout enough to deflect decent size limbs past the rack. After watching a tree rip a roof-top-tent right off of an 80 Series (Johnny was there too now that I think of it) I stepped up the priority of them. Without a roof rack I've never felt I needed them on a Tacoma, the w/s has a decent angle and there isn't a lip up top to catch. The snorkel can take some serious hits, in fact I've never really seen a snorkel get damaged, the air ram yes but not the snorkel body. The same trip as the 'RTT incident two of the attendees lost their snorkel pre-cleaners to trees but I don't think limb risers would combat that in the slightest?

To summarize my rambling, unless you have a rack or tent that could get ripped off on a Tacoma, I personally don't find them needed. On a 40 Series with a flat windshield and a fiberglass/sheetmetal lip extending forward of the a-piller it can be a worthwhile investment for those that play in the trees. :D

We had Nissan Patrol in Aussie last year that really could have benefited from risers, we tweaked the raingutters from all the hits the rack was taking :eek:

Good tips! I think I'm pursuing it out of boredom and something relatively inexpensive to add to the truck, but I figure as far as accessories go this isn't a bad one to have on hand for times spent on forest roads or on my fiance's family's property.

That's an interesting Tacoma. CB handle "Le Tigre"?

Anyway, definitely helps to see one on a Tacoma. I like it. I'm just not ready for the vinyl graphics on mine yet though. ;-)

Thanks for posting.

Bit of a hyjack:
Have a FJ Cruiser without brush guard but will be doing 530 miles of forest/loggig roads this summer and want to run wires too. ANyone have suggestions on how to run them from the front of the hood without a brush guard? Maybe something on the inside of hte hood?

There are underhood bow line attachment points we use for canoes and kayaks to secure the bow and stern. They are two straps with brass eyelets that you bolt or screw into inside of hood area...when not in use the stay inside of hood area..when used you flop them out and then shut hood with them outside. Then connect your limb risers to them only when needed.

Here is a pic of one type of the hood mounting straps

In this one you run the straps through a piece of PVC pipe..then shut hood over it...it stays in place and you dont have to drill into engine bay wall if not wanted and can be easily moved from one vehicle to another.

LIkely not as sturdy as mounting permanently or sem-ipermanently to bull bar or rack but is a good option for those that may only need or want them once a year for light brush and limbs.

The fender attachment bolts under the hood's sides might be a good attachment point. You could use a small piece of rounded edge strap iron to stress relieve the strap, and make it so it doesn't put pressure on the edge of the hood.

So where did you get those bull bar mounts from in Australia? You couldn't find it state side?

I would think you could get the Bull Bar straps at Granger or McMaster also most Electrical Supply stores should have them in LD and HD styles. The nylon web ones can be made by any canvas shop and if you want the metal ring they can get those as well.
Just some ideas for options.
