I've been lurking here for a while and picked up a lot from mud. Figured it's time to start giving back a little.

After obsessing over 100's for longer than a little while I pulled the trigger on this '03 LX a few months back, had around 138K on it. The PO was a grandma who had every single service done on time and obviously didn't have young kids ride in it.

I'm stoked on this rig. I've been wheeling for a few years now and have owned a '78 CJ-5, '89 yota pickup, '85 4Runner, '00 4Runner, and now this--something big enough to bring my growing family out wheeling with.

The plan is to start small and simple, then upgrade as the bounds get pushed. Nothing crazy.

The day I picked it up:

Notice the stock 18's were replaced along the way with chrome 16's. I was cool with it, I like the look of 18's better but I like the extra sidewall for wheelin'.

Then I dumped the running boards:

Then took it wheelin' off HWY 4, Sourgrass trail. It's a simple trail but one of our favorite spots, it's a nice area along the Stanislaus River. Not too much carnage, just a few scratches, a scraped wheel, and a dent in my muffler.

My two copilots that day

The rig did amazingly well. I'm looking forward to getting to know it's capabilities better.

Then it got new shoes, 285/75/16 Goodyear MTRs. I've made the mistake of compromising before so I didn't want to regret not getting the tires I wanted the first time around.

Then I got it tinted, 50% front two and 5% everywhere else. It sucks that CA has a law against tinting the front, it gets hot out in the valley! Rocky Mountain Window Tint in Livermore hooked it up. Matt is the best in the area, highly recommend (but he's backlogged by about 6 weeks so be prepared to wait a little).

I wasn't huge on chrome wheels so I played a little poker:

Sanded them down with some 80 grit, cleaned with tack cloth and acetone, then primer'd with some rusoleum self-etching primer:

The topped with about 4 coats of rusto gloss black. I prefer gloss since it's easier to clean, but I actually prefer a satin finish. After they're broken in a little they should be where I like them. We'll see.

Poser shots. I half-a55ed the center caps so I left them off since they didn't look right. I may redo them at some point.

Up next is getting the windshield pulled and new molding in the morning. The PO went to a shop that didn't seal it right so it was leaking on the passenger side. Lame.

After that, the wife doesn't like putting the kids in my rig without the running boards so I'm debating on what sliders to get.

Looking forward to getting out of the bay area rat race and back into the woods soon. :D

Looks great and mean, I am dying to get my 285's but not in the cards until after vacation in October, for now I have to tint the front windows, put a new HU in, among other little things

Nice looking LX. I like the black.
MTRs are awesome. I ran them on my 80. Pretty dang reasonable road manners for such and aggressive tire.
Amen on the 16's too. My 18's look great, and with a 275/70 tire there's enough sidewall for moderate wheeling, but not much to work with if you want to air down. I'm watching and waiting for some 17's or 16's.
How do the hand painted rims hold-up for people? I've never been a fan of the blacked-out approach, but it's growing on me, and I'm not really excited about the OEM grey-ish wheels.

Great looking ride!

My tint guy here in Costa Mesa has a tint ticket option for 25 bucks. They will take it off and replace it for free if you ever get a ticket. It's unlimited too pretty sweet. Rig looks great.

Looking good. How did the tires effect your butt dyno?

Looks nice. I really like the black on black. Are those shots taken in "hi" mode on the AHC? Are you planning on leaving it always in Hi?

Thanks! I heard that -- vacations come first!

Thanks @Hayes! Yeah I'm digging them so far. Looking forward to trying them out on the trail.

Hand painted rims are what they are. They're certainly not perfect or as durable as other options. The best part is being able to touch up easily. And it's cheap: about $20 total for the supplies for all four.

And yeah, blacked out is cliche these days. But I've liked black rims since I was a pimply teenager and I'm a creature of habit. If I get tired of them a new color is only $3.96 away :D

Thanks man! WTF?! That's bad a$$. I had to take my wife's off when she got ticketed and I didn't want to go down that road again. But if I had your option I'd be all over.

Hahaha butt dyno! Funny you ask, my wife drove it last night for the first time since the new tires. She said it's not as peppy as it used to be and it feels like the tires dig into the street as you accelerate. But, she also said that extra grip is perfect for me :smokin:

I can certainly feel the difference between my smaller-than-stock LTXs. Still have the power when I need it, just have to press harder. But, since I picked this rig up I'm in much less of a hurry these days so I usually cruise and don't accelerate too quickly anyway. These rigs are an antidote to road rage!

For me, 35's definitely wouldn't be on the table without gears.

Thanks @Rand! The poser shots (sans the tint picture) and the trail shots were on "hi". I thought about the hack to leave it in high mode, but I figure i really only need it in high on the trail so I decided against that. I'm gonna ride out the AHC as long as possible. But I don't want to drop much cash into it so I'll move on to a standard lift if the need arises.

Got the windshield and molding done this morning. There was some rust on the passenger-side A-pillar due to the shotty seal job the last shop did. Luckily I caught it now; the shop was able to handle it fairly easily. The new molding looks much better too.

This is why I'll always pay more to go to the reputable shop. Quality once is cheaper than crap thrice :hillbilly:

Love it. We're searching for a hundy ourselves for my wife, leaning towards an LX. Do you mind if I ask what you paid? You can PM if you'd like.

Got a chance to try the MTRs on the trail. They hooked up really well in the loose dirt and granite. I'm very glad I went with these.

We didn't get a chance to grab any photos. I know, that's whack. Hopefully I'll get another run soon.

It's been a while so I'd thought I'd post some updates. Nothing big. Just maintenance and enjoying the rig and learning stuff on this forum.

In my anti-chrome effort I plasti-dipped the emblems and grill.

I still have some more work here, thinking about doing the side molding and the bumpers at some point.

Took the kids camping near a river close by. Good times

Finally got a weathertech kit. This is required for me since my kids are still young and like to make as big of a mess as possible in our vehicles.

Then I picked up Slee's Hi-Lift mount for my factory rack. I also stole @Pork Soda's idea with the geeky sunshade, thanks bro!

Then some wheelin' on Labor Day. By happenstance we saw a ton of cruisers out there as part of @orangefj45's Sourgrass event. LOTS of really nice rigs to get inspiration from.

As always, it was a ton of fun being on the trail with my fam. Cruised around in Black Springs OHV area also, some nice views out there.

Then I picked up Slee's step sliders. The wife really appreciates them; she's done cursing my name for the lack of running boards when loading the kids. I'm digging them, can't wait to break them in.

That's all for now. Hope to get some more wheeling in while the weather is still awesome.

Planning my next phase: going to try to wrap up the armor with Slee's skid plate collection. Beyond just normal maintenance and bug fixing, I'm thinking gears and lockers. We'll see where I land.

Amen to these trucks being the antidote to road rage. Truck is looking quite good!

Looking good. Great progress.
