Anyone come across the problem of breaking or needing a new throttle cable for your toyota truck and noone sells one or can't find any??

I did!! I researched any wording for throttle cable. Called every store. Looked on eBay. Nothing. Just a few universal kits that was too short or too long or a hand throttle.

So here's what I did. Had a few beers. Stared at. My broken and frayed throttle cable. Thinking that's why I had to muscle the pedal down and why my motor took forever to reach idle between shifts and why I had such a high idle lately.

Then thought this is basically a bicycle brake line. So I called around and tried to find a bicycle shop that could help custom make a cable. Luckily for me they sucked at their jobs lol.

So I bought a Length of cable and some housing along with some barrel screws. Apparently they can't cut it to length and add a piece at the end to stop it. Soooo I got a lil piece that you thread the line through and screw it down I tighten it.

Any how. I basically made a new one. Keep in mind the little circle end piece that pulls the throttle linkage is smaller on a bicycle brake cable than it is on the throttle cable. So you will have to look at the end of your throttle cable and and you should see a circular plastic piece that goes around the end piece you're gonna need that. Along with the rubber housing that your old throttle cable ran through it connects to the firewall. Pics below. You will need to remove the old throttle cable from that housing and clean out any debris inside.

After cleaning it out you can simple run your line just like te old throttle cable. But will need I find a way to secure the End that attaches To the pedal so you can push the pedal and it pulls the throttle linkage.

New throttle cable with bicycle housing. Housing was too thin and did not work. Use the original housing in below pic to save yourself time.

Here's the plastic clip I took off the orginal throttle cable at the end that connects to the throttle linkage

This is the basic barrel screw thing you normally see on the hand brakes for bicycles. Fits perfectly in the gas pedal and locks It down pretty good.

This is the stock throttle cable housing I was talking about. This is the one you will need to rip your old frayed and broken line out. Clean it out and thread your new line through it.

Total cost of job. $5. As opposed to toyota a brand new part $90. Lmao. And in still using 75% toyota parts lol.

Save your self the headaches of searching and use a brake line. But em from Walmart. Bike shops. Hell even a motorcycle repair shop might have it.

But as I said if the bicycle shop had done it right how I asked. I would've not been able to get te stock throttle cable housing on. And would be trying to rig something up.

So there you go. A new throttle cable for under 5 bucks lol

When I broke the throttle cable on my weber carbed FJ40 about 5 years ago I used one from a garage door opener I had in the garage. Used the original outer housing. It's bigger than stock but I doubt it will ever break again. It's pretty funny to see 2 links of chain hanging down from the gas pedal.

I searched online for the cable too since the one in my 4runner is about to break. I found it on Amazon for $38.98 shipped, it's made in Colombia. I searched for 4runner accelerator cable not throttle cable.

It's pretty nice what you did though, I'd try it if I had not found it.

Yah man. I was searching for 2 days all day. She's my daily driver and I had I use my exs honda for work so I was pressured to get I fixed you know. Lol. But I looked everywhere. It's crazy. I was starting to think instead of Saving for a a rebuilt motor I'd just save for an upgrade to a later 90s motor if it'd fit. Atleast parts would be easy to find

Yah with these old cars you sometimes gotta rig something up to work. Or pay the price at toyota. I'm still looking for the plastics trim piece that sits vertical next to to the doors. I still ain't found out what it's called. But noone has it lol. So idk. I may have to fabricate something.

But good Job on the garage cable rig. The way I see it is. Even if my bike cable snaps. It's less than 5 bucks. Easily replaceable cus bike cables never change an wont get discontinued

:steer:aye man you didi the dam thing i always thought get a used one from a ecology if your lucky !! only 9.99 +entry & enviromental taxes:cheers:

Aronmigz,

If you want I can try and look for some of those trim pieces you need. Is your truck a single cab or king cab?

It a single cab '88 pickup 2wd..thanks man. I know back home these trucks are easier to find parts for but here in Cali. They becoming very rare
