My right rear leaf spring I noticed has a single break in it near the middle near the u-bolt. Handling or preforance does not seem to be effected. Do I need to replace both leaf springs or just the one broken one.

I am thinking about just placing one since mine is not a daily driver.

I do have 2inch shackles on the vehicle and heavy duty rear shocks.

Recommendation on purchasing HD leaf springs.

You have to fix it. Your springs are what keep your axles attached to the truck.

Easiest fix is to get another stock spring in decent shape and swap it in.

Although do'able, the risk you run in replacing just one spring only is that the opposite side has ????? years of fatigue, and your replacement has ????? years of unmatching fatigue. Your vehicle would end up leaning to one side or the other the rest of it's natural days on earth.

I would find another used one to replace it if you are looking to just get by now or if you have been thinking of upgrading then look at a new set up leaf springs. You can get some custom stock height springs made or look at the kits available like OME.

I also have a broken leaf spring. Mine is actually broken just outside of the u-bolt. I picked up some extra u-bolts at the auto parts store and have it all clamped up...been driving that way for several months now which sux.

no offense dude but that is one of the worst most unsafe things you can do...

what are you gonna do what that thing decides to slide out and spin the axle sideways and cause you to wreck and get hurt not to mention all of the other people on the road you can possibly injure or even worse... kill.

the pics below are what happens at crawl speed when you break a spring hanger. the same effect will happen when that leaf slides out as nothing will be holding that axle in place anymore.

No offense taken. That's why the rabbit is the daily driver! I am aware of the dangers and have seen this pic before from a previous post...I have been planning for suspension, just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

The top spring on the drivers rear side is broken. I have had it in some stressful situations and so far no movement of the the spring. It is clamped in two places and is not able to move laterally. I think that the only way for it to come out is axially and that can only happen if the military wrap leaf fails or if both clamps fail.

The night it broke, I went to sears to get the tires balanced. It was broken after that and I drove home on the highway. Something felt strange and when I got home I noticed that it was leaning to the drivers side...then I found it broken. I didn't drive it after that until I clamped it up. I really can't wait to get new suspension.

Here's a pic from the night I found it broken.

Lots of good advice in this thread.

Assuming you don't plan on doing a lift in the near future...then here are your options:

  • Find a replacement leaf and swap it in. Pretty messy job, but should end up OK.
  • Replace both sides with a used pair of rear springs.
  • Get a new set of rear springs.
If you want advice as to which option makes the most sense for you, we need more info...how many miles per year do you drive it, how do you use it, what are your plans for it in the future, what's your budget, etc.
