I've got an '84 HJ 60 with the stock 2H engine on it. It currently won't pass emissions here in Colorado, and smokes like Jackie Gleason.

The last visit to the Mechanic (to get the injectors rebuilt) indicated that the fuel injector pump needed rebuilding, and that was going to be around 4k. (I can't do this work myself, I don't have the tools, the garage space or the skills).

I started poking around the interwebs the other day and found some places in the far east that will sell me a 1HD-T (or they claim they will). How much trouble am I going to have getting this through customs/imported into the US?

Thanks.

4K to rebuild your IP?

Someone is selling you a load of crap--I say.

You can pull the IP yourself--it's really not that difficult. Or take it to a shop that will. Then take the IP down to Central Motive Power and get it rebuilt.

I would expect an IP rebuild to run around $1500.

FWIW, that's what I paid to have my 1HZ IP rebuilt, and the quote to rebuild a 3B IP was about $1250 IIRC. The 2H has the same basic pump type as the 3B, just with two more cylinders and on the other side of the engine.

If you are going down the path of importing an engine, or replacing your 2H, I would take a good look at the 12HT too. It will bolt in place of your 2H, and require minimal work to get running. It's a FANTASTIC motor in a 60.

Not that a 1HD-T would be bad, per se, but you're looking at a lot more work than a 12HT. Depending on your budget, it may just be easier to buy all the parts to build a new 1HD-T. I am 99% sure that is possible. But I would check with @beno to make sure, or get a ballpark on cost.

If I were dead set on getting a 1HD-T, I would personally look to import an entire truck (which is a pretty well known process). Buy a 1990 HDJ-80, take the engine for your 60 (and a few of the odds and ends you will need to make it work in your 60), and part out/sell the rest to fund the stuff that won't come with it that you would need (like the 1HZ flavor H55f).
