The brakes on my '89 62 are finally shot. Never changed brakes before. I looked through the FSM and it looks pretty straight forward, but is there anything I should look out for?

Brakes are easy.. just take your time and follow the FSM.

If your rotors are shot, then it becomes a little more complex as you have to pull the hub.

Might completely bleed the system at the same time to replace the old crappy brown fluid with new.

Fsm

New to the cruiser world. What is the FSM and where do I get one for my '88 FJ62? Thanks

I downloaded that fsm from birfield.com. Its great, you can print the pages that you need and tape them up to your cruiser. That way you can refer to them hands free.

Brake work is not hard job but you must exert your best concentration always because it's very closly related with safety.
When working for brake, I recommand you must check every part which is related with brake, master cylinder, line, p-valve, rotor as well as pad.
After finishing mechanical work, you must bleed hydrolic system very cafully and completely until you can get clean fluid without any bubble from bleeder plugs.

Update

Thought I'd close this out with a report on what happened.

I took my time and followed the FSM very closely. To make a long story short, my front brakes were shot...rotor was thinner than spec, pads were down to metal and the worse part....the calipers were hosed.

Asked a couple of mechanic friends of mine and they suggested replacing them.

Back brakes just needed new shoes.

So instead of being a ~$100 job like I was expecting, it turned out to be almost $500 and a heck of a lot more work than I bargained for.

Bright side...I know how to do a brake job on my LC although I wont have to worry about it for a long time.

Thanks for the tips!
