Brake lines - easy to forget these are old vehicles (1 Viewer)

I think the NAPA premium hoses are about 1/3 the price of the Toyota OEM hoses.

Where are the NAPA lines manufactured? When I found a leaking hose
I got in a hurry and went to O'Reillys wanting to replace it quickly, but once I got home and compared the lines I saw it was made in Chyna kerapp.
I then slowed down, ordered an OEM replacement, waited one day, and installed
the OEM line. Still have the Chyna junk hose but it won't go on my truck.

My factory brake lines lasted 320k plus miles. I have replaced the ones that look bad and will continue to switch out the other ones. I seriously doubt you'll ever get that much life out of a set of braided lines. Why risk it?

For the 3 needed for lifted trucks:

For US made stainless steel DOT brake hoses for lifted trucks, give me a couple more days for the OEM hardware to arrive 😉

I don’t disagree. But I have snagged a brake hose on some branches underwater. That was a bummer.

Oh and I have 380k on my truck and now about to have it’s fourth set of hoses. They should be changed.

That's tough luck for sure!

When i got the truck it had over 300k and was pretty severely neglected. Almost everything was original! I've been playing catch up since i got it haha.

The only good part about it not being a "nice" truck is that i have no problems beating on it when the need arises! And i got a great deal on it!

I've already ordered OEM lines. They've lasted this long without an issue.

The other lesson here is low miles doesn't equal no maintenance. I only have 130k miles on this truck.

Yeah, I ended up with going OEM. IIRC, they had something just right that the NAPA didn't. About $100 per IIRC, but worth it.

The enemies of brake lines, besides wear and tear, are UV exposure and ozone.

+1 to @NLXTACY ’s response to your experience.

Just because you been lucky, it’s like the stock market where there’s no illusion your luck will remain a constant. But hey, you do you - I just want you in front of me on downhills & behind me on inclines ;)

I hope some of the low miles bumpercrop of 80’s recently think to swap the soft brake lines in their 80’s, and maybe the heater valve & PHH.

22yrs is 22yrs.

Anyone have a ballpark price on the set of each, OEM soft brake lines, aftermarket soft lines, and Slee stainless lines?

the 4 fronts cost me about 170 at my cost, I would guess about another 75 for the rear. I think that the slee set is about 190 + shipping and aftermarket you could do it for under 100 + shipping.

I agree completely that they should be replaced. I've been getting this thing back up to snuff since i got it.

While doing my knuckle on the D/S I noticed the rubber line to be very brittle and had many cracks in it. 25 year old rubber just doesn't hold up. I think I'll replace the calipers and the lines when I finish the knuckles.

Bump in regards to braided lines.....

Went under the truck to measure front DS angles. Quickly forgot about it when I noticed inner passenger hose (frame to bracket, before caliper) had a frayed spot and was starting to wear on the inner rubber. Yikes. Looks like it's been rubbing on the tire on hard right turns, due to the way the hose is curved out. I've had it for less than two months, no idea how long it's been happening.

Lucky I caught it before it wore through & used a loose ziptie to hold it out of the way for now, but obviously want to replace ASAP. Would like another braided line, but can't seem to find a single? The rest of the kit is in great shape; braking is excellent.

Stock line 9094702817. If I can't get a single braided, I guess I can get an extended OEM 90947-A2016?

Just picked up all the solid brake lines for the truck, everything from Toyota. 220$ ish for the lot of em. Lots to do,.,.but I've had several go already. Driving w/out brakes=me trying to shift out of drive into neutral to avoid garage but hit reverse and turn into a bull rider. Do ur brakes, soft is next.

I upgraded to the Wit's End SS lines a year ago. They have been great, but the hardest part was bleeding the system. One-person, two-person, gravity techniques...I think it was the ABS. For safety-sake, I brought it to my mechanic and he fixed it.
