I installed new pads / rotors from NAPA on my GX460 and there is a slight grinding noise at low speeds ( I think it's just driver side ) that goes away as soon as I hit the brakes even just a little. Both rotors also developed this silver ring on the inside almost immediately and have stayed the same size.

I immediately went on a camping trip with some steep declines in the mountains and then a 700 mile trip on the highway and they performed great. While nothing has changed with the silver ring that appeared the grinding did get better but is still there a little.

I've always done brake / rotors on my Tacomas before my GX and have taken everything apart and installed twice but can't see anything off.

Should I keep on as usual or take it to a shop?

Myself, I'd take it to the shop. I don't mess with brakes if there is any issue at all.

Does the outside of the silver ring line up with the inside edge of the brake pads? Just guessing, but maybe the silver ring is an unworn surface where the brake pads don’t quite reach, i.e., it was always there but the outside ring got darker with wear. (Or, of course, maybe it’s something else rubbing that shouldn’t be.)

Do the inside and outside of the rotors have the same silver ring?

I’m not sure about the grinding noise but doesn’t seem right.

Could it also be that the pad guides or wear indicators aren’t installed correctly?

Do you have any more detailed pictures (wheel off, calipers clearances, pad contact)?

What brand of rotors and pads? I know i have seen someone who had a pad that interfered with a rotor. Neither were oem.

I have installed OEM and Brembo blank rotors as well as Green Stuff and ED+ pads on the J150 platform.

The EBC pads have a rotor cutting compound that is rough. Road trips dont count towards pad break in. Only city miles. If your pads have a rough compound for prepping the rotor surface then yoy might still be in this phase.

Have you bedded-in your pads?

The ring is the same on both driver / passenger with no lip or rise ( rotor is completely smooth ). I just looked at the product photos on NAPAs website and I can actually see the ring so I'm not too worried about that anymore. You can see it on the 3rd photo:

I went with Akebono pads this time and they claim no bedding is necessary. Even the NAPA employees told me I was fine but I still went through the process. I'm going to take them apart again tmrw and I'll snag some more pics. The "grinding" noise goes away as soon as I get over 10ish mph.

Is the dragging on all four corners? Driving through a parking garage can usually allow you to pin point the corner. I used to park in one and it was great for brake diagnostics.

Just the driver side and it's almost completely gone after driving this morning.

It goes into Toyota tmrw for oil, transmission and diff fluid changes ( $780.... ). I asked them to do a look over on my brakes so maybe they can see something.

May just be seating in still. Fingers crossed you just got some whiny pads that will soon STFU. 😂

Dragging can happen pretty often with new pads if the caliper pistons are not pushed all of the way back in the caliper. I usually use a C-clamp to compress both pistons as far into the caliper as possible. If both pistons it's not pushed all of the way in, the thicker new pads (and in your case, thicker new rotors) will contact the rotor until things self-clearance. If the drag is bad enough, your brakes can get quite hot and might actually overheat.

The drag can also occur you have calipers with sticky pistons and/or slide pins. It's not uncommon for water to get in the slide pins and cause problems. I usually pull them out, clean the slide pin (and the hole into the caliper bracket where the go), and add new brake grease onto them. If you didn't clean up the slide pins, I'd at least pull them and check/re-grease them.
