My brake pedal is very hard, I almost have to stand on it just to get it to stop. I have done some searching here and it sounds like it is the brake booster. The MC is under warranty so I just took it back and replaced it just to see what happened, nothing! So I know thats not the problem. A couple months ago I replaced the front pads and calipers.

Anyways, other then the brake booster is there anything else I should check? Is anybody parting out a 60 and want to sell one?

The brake booster needs vacuum to work, so make sure it's connected and the line isn't cracked. There is also a check valve in the body of the booster (where the vacuum hose connects). If this is leaking you might be loosing the vacuum, but I would expect this condition to be a more gradual loss of pedal feel, not a complete absence.

Just replaced mine, it's fairly easy and power brakes are much better than nonpowered brakes. One symptom I had was rough idling from the loss of vacuum when I tried to apply brakes. Check vacuum lines first, then post on parts wanted, I got several offers almost immediately and got a good booster for about $75. Rebuilt from vendors ran 2-3 hundred. Takes about 30 minutes and a little cussing under the dash.

***Resurrection Question***

Symptom: When car is running, I press down on brake pedal (not too far, not too short) and hold...4-5 seconds later the brake pedal 'kicks' back up a notch.

This happens when I'm driving and trying to brake as well. The rig does NOT stop immediately, kind of rolls untili let off and press again.

The symptom is making me believe the booster is not holding vacuum and needs replacing. Is my assumption correct?

I think one swap is to get a booster off a 4runner (aftermarket new).

I've replaced a booster before when the pedal was acting like trying to push a brick.

I've never had this syptom though: When car engine is on and in park, I press down on brake pedal and hold...4-5 seconds later the brake pedal 'kicks' back up a notch with my foot still on the pedal

Is this definitely a booster issue?
