Hi all, I’ve got a 73 drum brake fj. I just changed master cylinder brake lines wheel cylinders yadayadayada . Well in doing all that I’ve come across an interesting situation. My truck has been running a little funky at higher rpms I pull out rhe choke while at those rpms and she runs much better. So since I was doing the brakes I decided to run a test. I unplug the brake booster and drive it and that cures the issue at higher rpm. Plug it back in and problem returns. I don’t have any issues with my braking system what so ever. No classic signs of bad booster.. I sprayed countless cans of carb cleaner at the intake carb and brake booster check valve grommet. No signs of air leak..... and the truck runs great at idle , just that higher rpm. So is this a sign of a leaking brake booster? Only at higher rpms? Thanks in advance

Edit: if this is a sign of bad booster, can I replace with something newer(4Runner, minintruck booster)?

The booster and rebuild kit were no longer available for my 1972.
I sent it off to Booster Dewey in Portland Oregon.
He rebuilt it and sent it back like new.
That was about 6 years ago. At the time I think the cost was around $170.
It looks like he is still offering the service.

There may be a swap in option for yours from a different truck.
I installed a later Toyota two circuit master cylinder on the rebuilt booster and it worked great for disks in front and drums in back.
Adding the later master cylinder did not require a separate proportioning valve.

Details of that option are in other threads here on Mud complete with part number.

Thanks for the reply. But I’m really trying to figure out if that sounds like a bad booster and if a booster made for a disk brake vehicle would work on a drum brake vehicle. Or is that booster too much for the drums...

I installed a brake booster from city racer on my 77. Very happy with it. He also has one for earlier models with all drum brakes.
