So I searched and read the FAQ's, but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer. When a brake booster needs replacing on an FJ40, which Toyota vehicles can provide donors? Which of these require modification (e.g. spacers).

For example, people often mention that mini-truck boosters from the late 80's will work fine. But...AISIN part numbers differ for Toyota trucks. Are we talking a Hilux 4cyl 22R-E, a Toyota 22R or 22RE Pick-up, Hilux 6 cyl, etc.

Surely someone knows this answer....

a booster from a FJ60 works fine....

You are probably not going to get a definitive answer on this as there are soooooooo many variables. I know I put a MC from a '97 80-series becuase that is what I could find, the price was right and I trusted the guy as he was certain it was good. While the bolt holes were the same, I had to rotate it 180 degrees to get the vac port closest to the firewall/intake and had to space it out from the firewall ~1/4", cut the shaft to length plus adjust the pushrod. Plus it was about 1" larger in diameter which required some brake line re-routing.....Looking at these things side-by-side one would think there is no way in helll that they could interchange/be made to fit.

I guess the long and short of it is that virtually any Toy booster (minitruck, celica, supra, 60-series, 80-series, whatever) can work and share many similarities, but every one will have it's own particular issues to be dealt with. I would recommend going to a junkyard where you can walk around and pull your own stuff. Take some measurements of what you think will fit and note any special things like diameter, vac port orientation, etc. Yank one and go. I considered buying a reman unit from the autoparts store but I was unwilling to take a $200 risk relying upon the recommendation of someone on the internet...especially when there were sooooooo many differences of option. I could not find the same answers you are looking for. There is a certain amount of creativity and flexibility required to pull things like this off but they are by no means insurmountable. Now go find a junk yard and go take a looksee.

And if you get one from a FJ60/2, make sure you get the vacuum check valve as it is in the vac line between the intake and booster. I hear it is an expensive little bugger at the stealership.

more...........

here you can see how it had to be spaced out from the firewall. I used a 5/16 nuts and three flat washers on each stud.

Last thing......

I have been much more successful at pulling off stuff like this when I actually see what someone else has done. I don't make my living working on these things or any cars for that matter so I don't get the exposure of some. I have never been to GSMTR but from what I have heard it is the holy grail of all things Land Cruiser. Get up with your local Cruiser heads/LC-specific shops, etc and network, see what they have done, and possibly get access to their ideas, parts stash or recommendations. This forum is an awesome resource but there is no substitute for seeing it first-hand. Good luck.
