Dear esteemed mud braintrust,

My 2006 LC suffered total brake failure yesterday. It did the thing where the dashboard lights up (BRAKE, ABS, etc) and a nauseating beep continuously pierces your ears. Within 5 minutes the brakes had totally failed and I was flying by the seat of my pants (low gear, handbrake). After first panicking, then judicious crawling this forum for advice, I realise that this isn't an uncommon problem. Since I'm overcommitted on projects my plan is to just get it towed to the local mechanic I trust and pray they can fix it without bankrupting my student ass.

The thing is, my LC has only done ~175000 miles, and is a 2006. That makes it the youngest/lowest mileage of any of the cases I've read about here. Should I be worried?

/edit: I'm stupid so I only just saw this thread, and it looks like the most common bracket for failure is 150k-200k. But actually the most common bracket is not having total brake failure. Maybe I just needed a sympathetic ear.

I do live at the top of a hill next to town, so basically every time I take it out I have to go down and up 1,000 ft of elevation. That probably stresses the break system 20x more than equivalent mileage highway driving. Also I can appreciate that 2006 was a while ago and she's no longer the springest of chickens, so maybe it was just time (something people tell me about myself daily but they can go to hell).

Cheers,
Arya

Mileage is not an indicator of when brake masters fail.

I've had them at 400K miles and 25 years old, check out fine. The 1 million miles tundra, had no brake master issue. In "who has highest mileage" many high miles have stated no major issues.

It is mostly about: Improper or proper maintenance.

Ended up replacing the assembly for $2241.69+tax at a local mechanic I trust (near Berkeley, CA), as I noted in the other thread. The car was well maintained before I bought it but mostly by the dealer around here, which sucks. I hate them. They suck. Who knows what they messed up. One time they told me I had to replace a charcoal canister ($1000 + labour) but after that the problem persisted, turned out it only needed a new fuel cap. Jerks.

Anyway, sounds like bad luck for me. Glad it's taken care of.
