A friend has a box prado model KZJ78W (diesel engine, automatic transmission, behaving oddly. When he steps on the accelerator, not much happens. As in the engine RPM doesn't come up, the car creeps forward and eventually gets going. Same thing when he finally gets to highway speed, to pass he has to manually downshift, then can accelerate. Anyone have a clue or place to start looking?

Many thanks

1. - fuel filter

2. - Boost compensator - which on the EFI diesels is a manifold pressure sensor, usually located to the inside front fender by a small hose to the manifold and some wires to the harness.

Talked to the owner some more...they weren't sure about revving in neutral, but will check and I'll post the result here. The problem has been getting progressively worse. I'm suspicious, after looking through the engine manual (and thanks for the link Calvin!) about electrical connections to the ECU or maybe the turbo controller / boost compensator that John mentioned. More to follow....
thanks!
