Hi guys-new here.I mostly deal with rovers but I decided to buy this aussie fj45.I couldn't resist.I think its a great looking rig. Will be shipped here soon.Wont arrive until march.Just wanted to get some specs on what this vehicle has.Its totally original and its a 1972.
Questions
1.what is the engine and what is the hp and torque
2.what are the gear ratios in the diffs
3.is she capable of 65 comfortably on the highway
4.is the 3 speed fully syncromesh
5.what size and type of rims are these
6.will the original rims work with newer tubeless radials

Im looking for a driver-no offroad.Ive read that you can swap in newer fj60-62 3.70 diffs.I know the driveshaft flanges will have to be updated but can I still use my original axel shafts front and rear? Are the splines the same?

Thanks for your help guys-look forward to being part of the crusier crowd.Ive been to the fall gathering twice in my friends fj40.Next year I will try to bring this fj45.Thanks! jim:beer:

Nice score. Now flip your bezel.

Looks sweet! You could try posting in the Club 45 section too:

FJ45 Owners Club - IH8MUD Forums

Where are you located? You talked of the "Fall Gathering" so I am going to guess New England? If so, YankeeToys is the local club and you can find us in the clubhouse area.

Im in chester ct-my friend who has the fj40 lives in higganum-fall gathering was fun-good bbq ribs this year

Nice looking 45 I bet you can't wait till March enjoy.

Congratulations! Good looking rig! I will try to answer some of your questions. My answers are from USA FJ40 experience, the Aussie may be different.

1. It is most likely the F engine, not sure of the specs on it, (try the FAQ section). However the F is well known as having good torque.
2. If it is the same as USA it will be 4:11, as long as it has not been changed.
3. Very questionable.
4. No, first is non-syncro.
5. The pic looks like they are split rims. Not sure of stock size, try FAQ.
6. If they are splits, no to tubeless.

Welcome!

gunna leave most of the q's alone but i can tell u that i wouldnt push it to 65mph on a regular basis, the fastest i took my 40 with the F engine and 4.11 diffs was 70mph, down hill and i wouldnt push it that hard again. stock tire size is 28" i believe...31's make it a little more highway friendly though. iv heard about guys trying to push their great running 2F's to 80 ect and then wondering why they blow the engine...its not a small block, its not gunna drive like one...just kinda keep that in mind on the highway, they're heavy, old, slow trucks that will get you anywhere u wanna go, so long as your not inna hurry to get there

the engines run about 110-120 HP iirc, and put out about the same torque
anyways, wicked truck. hope you enjoy it...

Hi,

Nice truck. I am no expert, particularly on the pre 1975 but few pointers below. Best is the FAQ TLC FAQ v3.0 LAST MODIFICATION 08/10/03 give your self some time and just keep hitting next, it's not 100% complete but good background.

1. The FAQ says 125HP @ 3600RPM (if it is a petrol F as an FJ45 should have)

2. 4.11 and 3.7 are the common stock diff gears. I don't know when the 3.7 gears started to be standard fittment in the "European" spec perhaps always were? US got 4.11, don't know about Oz, axle codes are in the FAQ and should be on plates, perhaps you have photos, should be K052 3.7 or K082 4.11

3. capable is the key word, 3.7 gears would help.

4. not first gear. Pitty you can't get a crate of H42 (lower gear version of H41 standard US box good for swapping for H41 box, or H55F 5 speed box) on the back.

5. Rims look 16", tires look stock 750R16 (or 7.5R16). This means 7.5" high sidewall at 100% aspect ratio, diameter is 2 * 7.5" (top and bottom) plus diameter of 16" all equals 31". Generally 15" rims are found more in the US, 16" rest of world?

When you can check the info in March post up the correct info, would be a good reference for early Oz LC's which are not as common as US pre 1975's.

"not first gear. Pitty you can't get a crate of H42 (lower gear version of H41 standard US box good for swapping for H41 box, or H55F 5 speed box) on the back."

Got it backwards, H42 is the US version. H41 is non US version with lower gears

Would the axels bolt right in?I know the driveshaft flanges would have to be changed-but my rig is right hand drive-would that complicate things? He is in virginia so that is kinda far from me-it might be easier to swap in some 3.73 diffs and attack the brakes later if I fell i need disk-im sure the drums are adequate for just a on road driver right? Also It doesnt come with a heater so I will be looking for one in the future-there seems to be a couple rebuilt ones on ebay that look nice-how hard is it to run defrost ducts to the winsdheild and where can I get the parts for that?

Now that Ive been searching for original heaters and assemblies for the rhd fj45 Im thinking I will install a simple aftermarket heater in the cab and runs some ducts to the windshield-cheapest way to go

Good question about the axles. I would guess yes to swapping in. But that is a guess.

Most people hate the drums, lots of adjusting and not as much stopping power. Relatively expensive to rebuild/replace.

Perhaps a local junk yard might have donor vehicle for you?

As for the heater/defroster, stock shouldn't be that hard to route.

Nice score, i love those 45's... thinking of getting one myself ...

OH will this addiction ever stop ...

When you swap in-the 3.73s (or switch to a later axle), it is easier imho to replace the pinion flange than the driveshaft flange. You'll want to do this anyway because the replacement diffs will probably be leaky. Pinion flanges are pretty cheap at CruiserOutfitters -- in fact, they cost about the same as a speedi-sleeve for the leaking flange costs. ;) Buy a flange to match the shaft in your truck.

You'll also be wanting some disc brakes if you're going to drive this truck. Especially on the front.

You are quite right, my bad memory.

interesting-thought it was a 3 speed-just found out it is a 4 speed-wonder what model it is-the 4 speed is fully syncro right?

As far as I know all the 4-speeds are fully synchro.

Canadian FJ45s had 16" split rims. They look just like the ones in your picture. They take a tube type tire. (They also came with a hand crank as a stock accessory)

Looks like a nice truck. I wish I had bought one years ago when they were a little more common (like in 1977 when they were still being imported).
