First, I have a 1988 FJ62 and I've already reached out to Erik (SLCFJ62) about his ultimate harness (I'm on his waiting list). In the meantime, I did some research throughout these forums about headlamp options, and settled on the Bosch H1 and H4 headlamps (over Hella and Cibie (which aren't really available)).

On one of the threads, one poster had spoken to Bosch and listed the two part numbers for the Bosch H1 & H4:
  • H1: p/n 0301709100
  • H4: p/n 0301709001
I ordered those part numbers from RockAuto (same as the poster) - the website has the parts listed, but no photos/description. Anyway, lamps arrived but they are both H4 headlamps!

I reached out to the poster, haven't heard back, so figured I'd throw this out to the community to see if anyone could help? I'm throughly confused now, and am wondering if anyone knows the exact part numbers that I should order for Bosch H1 & H4 headlamps.

(I am aware of Daniel Stern Lighting, but I've been trying to save some money on this upgrade.)

Thanks for starting this thread packyb! I am in the same boat, Erik’s wait list and all. I am afraid I am of no help as I too have arrived at the same impasse. I would like to use Bosch H4’s and H1’s in my 88 62 but I can’t find a good inexpensive source. My only attempt to buy some H1’s was on Ebay and I lost the bid war. I wonder now if they were also H4's.
Hopefully some help will come our way.
Woodie

I got lucky and scored some brand new Bosch H4's on ebay a few years ago. Before that happened I found a place in Canada that sold them, and they would ship to the U.S. If I can find the link to them again I will post it. If some of our Canadian friends see this maybe they can point you to the right place.
The Bosch H4's are great on my FJ62 with upgraded wires. I also scored some Cibie H1's on ebay to make the upgrade complete. The Cibie's are amazing, I think they actually have recoil LOL. The lighting upgrade is some of the best $$ I have spent on my rig. Good luck!!

PS..
I might have a set of well used Bosch H4's laying around. The lenses have some wear and tear, but they aren't cracked. I will look and if I still have them I will let them go cheap.

FWIW, last time I spoke with Dan Stern, he recommended Bosch ECE H4s and Hella for the H1s. That's what I plan to do if/when I can find a pair of ECE Bosch H4 housings for an affordable price.

Already got Hella for all four lights, and they do awesome.

hmmm. i bought a IPF harness because erik wasn't making them for a while i believe. i got hella h4 and h1 because they were easily available if one got broken. i love the high beams. they are awesome. my h4 low beams suck though. i've tried different bulbs of good quality and am just not happy. i still have to compare the adjustment with my other vehicle because maybe they are just aimed wrong. its nice to know that others are happy with the hella upgrade. maybe mine can still make me happy with some tuning.

i dont have anything to offer regarding the bosch h1 numbers though. sorry

Are you using DOT or ECE H4 housings? ECE gives a far better beam pattern than DOT. Also, the bulb you use has a large impact on light output and overall quality.

euro housings (i assume this is ECE as they are not DOT). i tired the high output hella h4s. didnt like the yellow light they gave and were very dim. now have sylvania lights in now. better white light but still quite dim.

I'd just use the H4's in both locations, just don't wire one pair to light up the low beams (put those on a separate switch!).

No experience with the small rectangular Hella H4's, but I'm not impressed with any of my E code large rectangle Hella's. They are far better than any sealed beam that I've seen, but both sets of my JCW sourced 7" round and my set of Bosch 5-1/4" Round H4's work far, far better.

My attempt to actually buy something from Stern resulted in no product and a fair amount of wasted time emailing back and forth. I don't even bother with his site any more.

Okay, the plot thickens...

The poster who originally posted the Bosch part numbers on another thread got back to me and told me that although the boxes for the two part numbers that he received also both said "H4", when he opened the boxes, one was for an H4 connection and one for an H1 connection. Taking his lead, I opened my boxes, and there are two different types of connections.

The pictures in this post are for headlamps that are clearly marked H4 (p/n 0301709100, made in Sweden); the pictures in the post below are for the headlamps that have "Lampre H1" (French for "Lamp H1") marked on the connection (p/n 0301709001, made in France).

Since this is all entirely beyond my pay grade, can anyone tell me if, despite what the boxes say, I do in fact have both H1 and H4 headlamps?

This post is directly related to the one above - for p/n0301709001.

Again, do I actually have H1 & H4 headlamps??

you have 1 H4 and 1 H1

on the front of the 1st lamp is is stamped H4(also H4 marked on sticker on back), on the back of the 2nd lamp its marked H1, also if both H4's the hole where the bulb would go would be the same on each, your are not

Packyb,as i pm'd you,you have the correct h1 and h4 lamps, your good to go. As you will see,set your h1 bulbs inside your lamp and it will be a perfect fit as the h4 bulbs differ. As for the wiring harness i went with IPF 002 n 004,as erik had stopped making his harness at that time(which i really wanted to order) hth...gil

Thanks for the feedback. And just to be clear, I ordered/received two of each (four headlamps total), but only posted one photo of each for this thread.

Thanks to Pandasfj for the Bosch part numbers - hopefully this helps the next person looking to upgrade their headlamps on their FJ62. (Supposedly Daniel Stern recommends the Bosch headlamps in lieu of the Cibie which are (at the very least) tough to find.)

I have H1 (55W) & H4 (60/55W) bulbs from Hella, so once I get the ultimate harness, I'll be all set! Definitely looking forward to this upgrade - my stock setup is so dim, bordering on unsafe.

Looks like those Bosch housings are already kaput on Rockauto. Just now did a search using every variation of those numbers I could think of and got zero results each time.

Damn

Edit: The P/N for the H4 housing came up, listed as "bulb" for $43. Looks like the H4 is still floating around, but no luck with the H1 (which is okay for me, since I'd stick to my Hella H1 housings anyway).

Spook50 - when I ordered mine from RockAuto, they came up as "bulb" as well, but it was the housing.

Also, try Summitracing.com - I know they had both of them when I placed my order.

Another source for Hella ECE headlights is www.rallylights.com. I have ordered headlights from them but it has been a couple of years. I recently checked, and they are still selling them. So, follow these steps to check out their pricing and availability. These are for an FJ62.

Go to www.rallylights.com

Search for HL79566. This is the H4 hi/lo beam headlight. You need TWO of these. You do NOT need an wiring adapter if you are also purchasing a new headlight harness.

Then search for HL79565. This is the H1 high beam only headlight. You need TWO of these as well. No wiring adapter is required. NOTE: You CANNOT use these headlights with the stock wiring harness. You will blow a fuse. You MUST use these headlights with a new wiring harness that has switched hot for this circuit.

The lamp for each headlight is sold separately. Search for HL78156 which are the H4 60/55W hi/lo lamps and order TWO of those. Then search for HL78105 which are the H1 hi beam only in 55W. You will also need TWO of those. You will also notice some higher watt lamps in both the H4 and H1 varieties. I always recommend you start with the lower watt bulbs for two reasons: they last longer than the higher watt bulbs, and the higher watt bulbs are technically illegal. So try the lower watt bulbs first. You may also want to order spares, or even different wattages to try out. They are reasonably inexpensive at under $5 each.

slcfj62's generous give away has me thinking again about my headlight upgrade. Rallylights has 2 options for the H4: the ECE H4 that is recommended above, and the "Hella HL21100 165mm Free Form Hi-Lo H4 Conversion Headlamp, DOT and ECE". http://www.rallylights.com/all/ligh...rsion-headlamp-dot-and-ece-included-bulb.html. I can't tell from the descriptions what the difference is. I plan to go ahead with slc's recommendation of the HL79566, but just wanted to check if anything had changed in the year since that post.
