Gosh Keith, that sucks about the motor!

Been working on the 69'...alot. Fixing stuff that I can afford to. Painted front bumper, bib and added some lights. Made some brackets to mount the lights to the tow hooks.

More painted stuff...thrilling I know! When the paint cures need to install the U-Joints. harbor Freight has a tool for $39.00.

Oh, and sent the 1bb to Marks Off road as the Float or something was sticking when it got hot. Carb due back Monday:clap:

The JetBoil worked just fine. I took one full large canister of fuel and I guess there's about 1/3 to 1/2 the fuel left in it (I still need to weigh it to determine the actual grams and % of fuel remaining). Not bad for 2 meals per day, coffee, tea, hot chocolate over 4.5 days and 3-hungry backpackers!

meet me at 8:00 am tomorrow, you can be my camp chef for this week up in the Ruby's! I have a jetboil all packed up in my Eberlestock right now.:grinpimp:

That's a great unit that works SUPER fast and SUPER efficient!

I'm turning 24 on thursday (half way to 48... oh man... haha!) so hopefully spending my brithday up in the mountains by myself will pay off with a beautiful mule deer as my present.

Good luck! Sheesh...you're a yungin'! Happy Birthday Matt!

Cant beat that.
May do that for a stove for Jezebel....:hmm:
Can ya cook eggs and such with it!?

Looks GREAT!
I LOVE PAINT! Its amazing what a little elbow grease and love will do for these old parts. I spent yesterday afternoon stripping down my front leaf spring pack and descaling the rust and crap. They will get painted and look brand spankin new for a minute or two.;p
Nice to see progress!

For actual cooking you will need one of their (or any other type lightweight pan) two optional pans and their optional ($20) pan support (comes with tri-leg fuel can holder/brace): Pot with lid or the fry pan.

Keep the flame down low for eggs...scrambled would be best here as the flame spot is relatively small diameter compared to the pan diameter. But I was able to fry the trout in about 1/8" deep olive oil...again by keeping the flame down. And we also fried up some falafels that were good...you just have to be careful not to overload the pan on these due to the high altitude diminishing available BTU.

...... God I love the simplicity of backpacking! Sure is nice not having to spend hundreds of hours modding and/or fixing the darn thing
....
Ummm maybe....
My kid is getting into back packing so we hauled my old gear out of storage. Turns out the strap and hip belt foam is shot from age. Further it seems replacement straps for external frame packs are made of unobtainium.
He'll probably just get a new pack but I'd like to go with him sometimes and really want to use the gear I have. So I'll be spending some time this winter either re-working what I have or making new parts.

Life is never simple is it?

Simple is so relative ;). If this beast doesn't give me a break soon I'll be moving to a simpler form of exploration (relatively) :D

Well the latest in the hansen world.
Got a call from the wife today (Jack has already been privy to this story...) saying that the daughters 4 runner is over heating and there's smoke coming from the motor.
She get it home and there is a hissing sound from the back of the motor and its smoking white. FAAAAAWWWWWK Im looking for a hose. theres no hose back there leaking...head gasket...gotta be.
I call Jack (hoping he may have an EASIER and CHEAPER solution) NOPE...Jack confirmed the suspicion and added "You dont wanna **** with that. Its a B*TCH!" in not so many words.
Long story short..I had to call upon the "MAN".its been towed to sunshine auto. The dark horse in the expense will be the machining. Itll either be 100 or 300 or a new head. Wish that Id have known the 3.0 was sh*t toy motor....So the labor and parts are 1400 and then the machining.

Ah well!

Get new 02 sensors. The old ones will be smoked from the antifreeze. Also, Toyota brand gaskets are the best you can buy, even though they are $$$$.

Thanks for the tip...I didnt think of the AF in the O2's. Toyota had a recall for this issue and supposedly THIS truck had been in for the recall in 00'. They obviously didnt fix the problem!?
However, the HG repair is OUT of my hands now. Im PAYING to have this done though Im wishing that I could have done it myself.
They called me and said..."the tech that is working on the truck is recommending a rebuild or replacing the motor with a rebuild." I asked "why"? "well...because its got such high mileage." It has 154K on it. I ask " is there anything WRONG with the motor" He said "well...no, but it just based on the mileage it has." I replied " **** NO! Were not rebuilding a good motor that runs great. (then I went off) My Land crusier had 230K miles on the original motor...BLAH BLAH BLAH. Were NOT rebuilding this motor!!!"
WTF!?!?! Re build a motor that runs actaully very good (aside from the current situation.) This is why people hate mechanics! If I were some dumb ass that didnt know anything about cars, these F*CKERS would be getting a rebuild job out of a HG repair. Its not enough that I entrusted them with the job to begin with, but now theryre coming back looking for MORE!!! UUUUUGH! That is why I learned to do it myself...I wish Id have just done that. Moved my s*** over in the garage, spent a day cleaning so i could work with some organization and then tore into it. That call REALLY PISSED ME OFF!

Rant over!

Thanks for the tip Will!

Keith

I have a friend who had this same work done on the same type engine. I think it is pretty common. When you get it back Keith make sure they provide you a written guarantee on the work they did.

I know you could have done the work but sometimes it is best to decide if it is worth your time or better to pay to have it done and get a guarantee in case it doesn't hold up.

It is not easy to find a mechanic you trust anymore and does good work too.

One other tip...I just did a HG in my little read crapmobile when the relatively new HG the PO put in blew out. Less than 100 miles after getting it back on the road the seal between the aluminum radiator core and plastic tank blew out. Apparently those don't like being in contact with oil for very long. If the radiator is all metal I imagine you are OK, but if it has plastic tanks and you had the chocolate milkshake in the coolant problem, keep an eye on it.

Well....ANOTHER development!
The 4 runner is back at my house and Ill NOW be doing the work on it.
As stated, they recommended a re build and said that they essentially could NOT guarantee the work otherwise. They had not pulled it apart yet, they ID'd the leak at the rear of the DS head.
What it ALL came down to was what condition the head was in. If the head was cracked or warped beyond repair, the bill was gonna get EXPENSIVE...REALLY QUICK!
I sourced a set of re maned heads and they are about 250 a piece. Worst case...I get the re man heads.
I didnt wanna get into the labor costs only to find that the whole thing was gonna BLOW out of porportion. If that was to be the case, I wanted it to happen on my time, not theirs.

Sooo. Im a glut for punishment. Ill be saving about a grand though!

Sooo. Ill be SLAVING on this till its done as it HAS to be up and running ASAP!

Holy crap. I agree, sometimes it just amazes me what some shops try. I really miss Jereme with Asian Specialized. Too bad he couldn't make it in this economy. He was extremely honest with me and everyone that I sent to him. Good HONEST mechanics are hard to find.

As far as you working on that thing...GOOD LUCK brother. I wish I could give you a helping hand.

Jack

I've got a compadre that used to work at Toyota, he might be able to give you some quick hints if you have issues.

When I had to do the HG on my 3.4 Taco motor, he was an immense help.

I'll list off what I can remember that he taught me.

Take it apart in the biggest components you can. Don't take apart anything not necessary, unless you find a leak.

If you have a friend, you don't have to remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Just loosen the bolts on both sides, then have a friend help you lift off both heads at the same time. It will save you a lot of time.

Right now is a good time to do the timing belt, the water pump and adjust the valves. You're already there, so prepare the engine for these jobs before you tear into it. Ie. Put the motor on TDC, etc.

Only use Toyota gaskets and coolant. The red yota coolant tends to clog small leaks rather than make them worse. Don't know why, but it does.

Have the heads surfaced if it got hot. Don't even mess with putting them back on unless the gasket failed and she shut it off right away. Get the valves checked while you are there, most times they use coolant for a long time before they get this bad, that poisons the 02 sensors, then it runs lean and burns the exhaust valves out of it. You can have valves that look good, but are burnt when you pull them out of the head.

Chase all the bolt holes with a metric cleaning tap, not a cutting tap.

Don't forget to tighten all the grounds and double check them all before you start it for the first time. I had a loose one and had to tow it home till I found the problem.

Now is also a good time to pressure wash the radiator, if you have to remove it to do the job.
